Highly Recommend! A favorite amongst locals.
Food was amazing and so were the owner Lulu and her husband. Everything is GLUTEN FREE, so if you have Celiac Dz or know someone that does, this is the place to go. And even if you're not avoiding gluten, the food is still excellent, in taste, quality, and presentation.
The owner himself says he has Celiac Dz and that's why everything is sin Gluten. Being his patron and not his doctor, I couldn't confirm his diagnosis with immunologic studies and biopsy results, but his arms did have a slight amount of the characteristic dermatologic manifestation of Celiac Dz - dermatitis herpetiformis.
That being said, the food was amazing. We had the Casado with Fillete de Pollo (Chicken Breast Fillet that comes with with Rice, Beans, Picadillo, Plantains, a Corn Tortilla and a slice of authentic Costa Rican Cheese, Salad and a piece of Corn). Tasty, clean, and filling.
Also the juices were amazing. We tried all 3 that were in season at the time, lime, orange, and tamarind. Lulu said that they are made directly from the fruit, no frozen pulp is used, and for sure the flavorful taste can attest to that.
I took the picture after I had already started mixing up stuff and started eating, so the picture is not the best respresention of how the food was presented. The Beans and the Picadillo were in separate little bowls and the tortilla is covering up the cheese and the plantains. I wish I had taken a pic before I started!
Definitely recommend. You will not be...
Read moreWe got a drink with vanilla, soursop, and I believe it was coconut. I swear that drink is God’s gift to earth, besides coffee. I got a ham and cheese sandwich and the bread was perfectly toasted. It was a bit small but I was looking for something light so I was satisfied. My boyfriend wanted a empanada, and while they don’t have any on the menu, the owner suggested the best place in town and even offered us a ride there since he was on his way anyways. It’s great to see them support other businesses while making sure my boyfriend was able to find a empanada he was craving. The next day, I got the Casado con filet de pescado (fish). The fish was soft, flaky, and had a nice crisp on the edges. There was a little side salad with what I believe was corn and some other vegetable. It was so good I didn’t waste time investigating. I wish I had one more day to eat here before I leave, however, I doubt the phone would eat first. All I have to show of the Casado is my empty plate. Skipping this place during your trip to la Fortuna would be a major mistake. The customer service is incredible, the kitchen is clean, and the food makes you feel like you’re at home. You can taste how it is...
Read moreThe kind of place that just feels like a hug. It’s literally a home turned into a restaurant, and that cozy, welcoming vibe shines through in every detail. The food? Absolutely delicious!! Like you’re getting a homemade meal from someone’s abuela.
One standout moment: my friend doesn’t eat tilapia (which is the fish they serve), so they literally went to the market to buy salmon just for her, made it the next day, and it came out perfect, even though it wasn’t on the menu. That kind of kindness and trust is rare. We said we’d come back and they just believed us. (And we did!)
Prices were super reasonable (a nice break from the tourist markups), everything is made fresh in an open kitchen, and it’s very clean. Fresh fruit is served complimentary for breakfast ♥, which was such a sweet touch. If it were up to me, I’d have eaten there every morning. It’s simple, genuine, and honestly just...
