Το Μαειρκό της Μέντρης — Restaurant in Nicosia

Right at the center of Nicosia, in an alleyway just off Makariou you'll find To Maeirko tis Mentris. Daily traditional dishes and your regular taverna grilled specials (Souvlakia, pork chops, sieftalies etc). They have meze for just 20€ pp. We didn't want any meat so ordered a few vegetarian dishes. The aubergine dish with the potatoes and feta on top was divine. Probably the best we've had in some time. Halloumi was cooked to perfection and so were the mushrooms and peppers. The salad was fresh, staff were friendly and the atmosphere was lovely. Definitely going back to try some more dishes. They also brought some complementary halva in the end which was definitely out of a Cypriot grandmas recipe book.

Sadly after revisiting the attitude of the owner towards our kids (we went with guests) suggested that it’s not a kid friendly place. Coming over and shushing a 4 year old because it wanted a toy the other 4 year old wanted is unacceptable. It was a 2 minute issue (cry) and we would have solved the issue without him coming over and acting like that. The kids were in their seats and weren’t running around or disturbing in any other way the rest of the clients. Obviously kids aren’t robots and especially toddlers. They can’t regulate their feelings at this age and it might take few minutes to calm them down if they’re upset.That’s why I walked out with them and went next door and got them ice cream before the rest of the table was done with dessert. The saddest part was that the food was nice and I would like to support a small business but the behavior is unacceptable. Been to numerous 5* hotels and formal restaurants in Cyprus and abroad and never had an issue with the behaviour of my kid. Not to mention is rude to intervene in a child/parent situation in any...

I've been a customer there for years — now I’m proud to say we’ve become friends too. Every visit feels like stepping into a warm Cypriot kitchen, where mummy’s cooking is always waiting with love.

Today’s choice: Faji moujentra – comfort food at its best! (Yes, I know… I still ask for ketchup with my lentils — and Filippos and Monica still laugh every time. 😄)

No matter what I choose, every dish is homemade, full of flavour, and always served with a smile.

We discovered this place by chance and absolutely loved it. It's not always possible to get an available table right away, you need to be lucky as this restaurant is super busy at any day. Last time we decided to have a meal there, our plates were all cleaned out. It was that good! We'll be coming back...
