Firstly, if you are not hungry, don't have a starter! Secondly, those 5 star reviews. We gmapped for authentic cypriot food. I saw all those 5star reviews n thought "yeah, con!" I happily take that back. To Eklekton is a small taverna run by an enphusiastic local with a passion for authenticity, local cuisine and service.
The portions are HUGE!! which brings us to our third issue. Mezes. I cannot think of a comparison. Think lots of small portions of various food stuffs served in four courses. so lets say the appetiser has 6 dishes, the starter has 8 dishes, the main course has 6 dishes and then theres a fourth course, of say another 6 dishes. For those thinking Tapas, nice try, but you're not reading that right. Mezes is HUGE. Theres a reason it's served in portions of two and more.
The owner is fun, witty, and knowledgable and has picked his staff with care to detail.
The downside. ok. lets have a downside. ... erm. Oh, I know, there should be someone outside telling you to wear strechy pants n no belt!
The food is prepared with love and served perfectly (but in very large portions - unless you're one of lifes gannets that sues all you can eat buffets you're gonna be full) in a setting that can only be described as highly original. It'l take more than one trip to see ALL the items in the collection, and you will probably want to visit more than once. We will certainly be returning on our next visit to this wonderful island.
A restaurant will almost 99% 5star reviews ... they've...
Read moreCame here with my wife and parents as we were looking for a traditional taverna away from the main tourist areas. Was a bit apprehensive at first as we weren’t sure what to expect but I have to say the food here is amazing. We ordered the mixed Meze and the selection of dishes were outstanding, when each dish was presented we were given a brief explanation of each one which was very helpful as we haven’t had this style of food before. The flavour combinations were great and there wasn’t a single dish we didn’t enjoy. Be warned the meze selection is enormous and you will definitely not leave here hungry. Our total bill for 4 people with a large carafe of wine was just over €100 which in this day and age is phenomenally good value for money. The owner is very passionate about what he does and really cares about the guest experience and is also a really nice guy. If you’re in the Paphos area and are feeling really hungry this is definitely...
Read moreWe wanted to try it after reading the positive comments, but unfortunately were disappointed.
The halloumi starter was tiny and deep fried, looked and tasted industrial. Never saw that in a tavern before! The meat in the grill platter was dry. The only dish we liked was the moussaka.
The real shock for me was the restroom, absolutely disgusting. No liquid soap, only désinfectant (?) or dry old hard soap, which is not hygienic at all in a place like a cafe. No toilet paper, dirty sink, the renovation has not been done for the past 50+ years. I felt disrespected as a client to be in such conditions. It makes you wonder how they clean the kitchen if the toilet in this condition.
The owner was very kind but he is unfortunately the only Cypriot working in the traditional tavern.
Overall, we might have chosen a bad day to visit, but it was a disappointing experience overall, not corresponding with the positive reviews...
