Bašta neighborhood brewery — Restaurant in Prague

Disclaimer: I used to like this place. We used to come with my colleagues on Fridays after work (between 2009-2010), having beer, snack and playing chess. The service was never my favorite and sometimes noticeably unfriendly even back then, but I found it generally a nice place and I was willing to pay the high premium for a home-brewed beer.

I visited Prague recently and because I was meeting a group of international friends I wanted to show them a place bit aside of the tourist rip-offs in the center and because it was getting late and we walked a lot, I thought we could have a beer there. So we found a table there got beers and had a nice time chatting for about 40 minutes. Then a last order call came and shortly the service brought the bill which I find all standard. But what came next was quite a jaw dropper. At 23:59 the service distributed white plastic cups without a single word and showed us the door. Most of us had still half of the last beer left at that moment. We were quite speechless on how far can one go to make your paying customer make feel bad. After the initial moment of awkward silence, because the company at the next table looked equally perplexed, my Czech friend asked the waitress sheepishly what we are supposed to do with those cups. She replied that the clerks at the post also go home at 5, not at quarter past.

And yes, this person had cashed our tips just minutes ago. So we left the half full glasses on the table, I apologized to my friends and tried to remember when I felt more embarrassed in recent years.

If you don't mind the risk, that you will be treated like a persona-non-grata, and the people you just paid will talk to you as if you just killed their pet, then go. My self-respect tells me, never...

Amazing food, literally, I love it. Starting from great broth soup, famous baked stuffed quarter of a duck, deep fried jalapeños stuffed with cheddar cheese. Their beer is good as well.

The downside of this nice place are few waitors. They might make a mistake and bring you a dark beer instead of a light one and if you tell them they act like being irritated. Last time, we were here in a greater group, we've been arriving through an hour and the waitor was explicitely annoyed that we were ordering food in different turns and not at once. Even such thing can be communicated more politely. Honestly, since the place is usually overcrowded, it feels like these waitors are not happy for customers anymore. Sadly, it used to be really different...

Really good restaurant. The stuffed duck is really tasty and good. I would recommend making reservations although. They aren’t too keen on the phone to non-czechs. For example I called and tried to make a reservation and they told me they were booked. I had my Czech friend call 2 minutes late and they magically had a reservation available. So if you are non-Czech have your hotel or someone call and make reservations for you. I get it they dont want it to become a tourist spot but everyone should get a chance to taste there food!!! but all the waiters and staff were super nice! Would def....
