U Houbare is a typical brown Czech neighborhood pub with service located in the Holosovice district only 15 minutes by tram from the center of Prague. The guests at the place mostly seemed to be Czech regulars from the area and there seemed to be few tourists in a city that is otherwise full of them.
The venue itself is brown, rough and has survived the urge many have had for modernization and renewal.
The menu mostly consists of Czech home cooking, which means a lot of meat, knödel and sauce, in addition to a good selection of schnitzels with various types of side dishes.
The service came across as informal, but present in a classic and pleasant way that fits well with the rest of the place. The drink order was taken when the menu was presented on the table and a frothy glass of Czech beer was on the table at about the same time.
We chose to order snitzel with mushroom sauce and snitzel Vienna style respectively. The food was served after approx. 15 minutes, which was experienced as within in relation to the type of place. The food was nicely presented and seemed to be made from scratch using fresh and fresh ingredients. The portions appeared generous and the food tasted excellent. Do not expect gourmet, but folk, generous and home-made food with Czech love.
The waiter followed up well during the meal, asked if the food was tasty and quickly offered more to drink when the glasses were empty. We also received quick attention when we wanted to pay and a nice greeting when we left the place.
This was one of those rare moments where you experience genuine and real food based on love and tradition. If you're looking for this, you can't get any better. Unfortunately, there are not many such places left in Prague.
I will visit the place next time I am in Prague and can recommend it to anyone who is...
Read moreWe came to this place of recomended read in internet and we are disappointed. Decorated made good climate inside and they serving tasty beer but staff was non symphatetic, and we didn't expect smile for ear to ear or something, we expected just - hello, thank you, bye - but we hadn't pleasure for hear this basicly words like hello and good bye. Staff looked like upset for all world (and there wasn't so much work at this moment when we came, just 3 tabels was occupied). We wanted to try typical "smazeny syr" and unfortunately it was like this which we bought in market. We don't know, maybe we came in bad time of staff or some things change from this time when everyone wrote this good reviews but we are disappointed. 2 stars because...
Read moreExtremely bad food, bad service and very rude waiter. We ordered steaks and as we were waiting we were hearιing from the kitchen an intense noise like someone was hitting something with a cleaver or axe. We laughed and said to each other "is it for our steaks?". It turned out that it was. My steak was absolutely impossible to chew. It felt like rubber and tasted like tire. The waiter didn't listen to my complaints. He made fun of me and he answered in Czech (probably was telling offending things for me, judging by the tone of his voice). I think that the least they had to do was to apologize for ruining our night. Avoid...
