Generous portions, very tasty food, lovely staff. A real hidden gem (especially with all the construction blocking the storefront) but well worth a visit.
Had the Feb 2024 monthly special Typhoon shrimp, and shared the sides of lotus root salad, crispy chicken and pan fried dumplings, while a friend had the main Char Sui fried rice with bok choy. Over ordered a bit so ended up each taking home half our mains and some of the sides each, so great value for money if you consider it's 4 meals instead of 2!
The mains were definitely the highlight. Tender Char Sui with great marbling = good mouth feel without being overly fatty or too lean/dry. I didn't try the fried rice myself but heard no complaints so can only assume it was great too. The Typhoon shrimp was not as spicy as one might hope for (or fear) even though it was fried with dried chili, but it had a generous amount of juicy shrimp and soft onions, coated in great crispy bits. 9/10 (could use more chili)
Especially compared to the mains, the sides didn't quite live up my hopes. The fried chicken bites were big succulent bites of chicken coated in a crisp exterior, but I felt they could have used more seasoning, and definitely more chili in the hoisin chili dipping sauce. The lotus root salad was a bit underwhelming, again not as punchy with the vinegar or chili as I expected, and the pan fried dumplings were a bit too neutral to be memorable for me. So not stand out side dishes, but the mains more than made up for that.
Next time I'll just focus on the mains. I had a lot of food envy when the sizzling black pepper beef or crispy duck dishes passed by our table, with their mouth watering aromas and steam trailing behind them, so I'll definitely be back for those!
All in all, great restaurant, fast efficient service, option to take home leftovers (just pay for a little container), and good value for money main dishes. Chinese comfort food,...
Read moreDecided to walk to Lees Kitchen (40 mins) - hoping we’d get some food, unfortunately it didn’t happen. I was disappointed with the overall experience and how the place was run. When we arrived at the door 6:30pm nobody came out to ask names, or suggested how long a table would be and a waiting list appeared non existent. There was a queue of about 3 couples in front - after waiting 30minutes in line we decided to walk around for an hour and come back. When we arrived back at 7:40pm the queue of couples were STILL IN THE LINE 🤦♀️ by 8:15pm I noticed the people eating in the windows were the exact people eating and seated since 6:30pm?? The place is small, busy - perhaps there should be a quick turn over with tables. As a busy restaurant perhaps for future business (on the busiest times / days) people should have a time limit with 1hour and 30minutes per table this way everyone gets to eat. When we finally got in the door we were told the place is too busy and they can’t take anymore people, which I felt it was unfair considering we waited 2 hours. Overall the food did look good - unfortunately didn’t get...
Read moreWe hit that point in the trip when all we wanted was something familiar to eat, and by familiar I mean rice. Google led us to Lee’s Kitchen and there were about five parties ahead of us, but we were committed, so we waited. The temperature dropped a few degrees while we stood there which only made me hungrier and slightly dramatic in my head about it.
When it was finally our turn, we were told we could either order through the barcode or walk back to the counter. We are a family style crew through and through, so we went for it. I am pretty sure we scared the table next to us when dish after dish started arriving for a family of three. The server even offered to bag my custard buns because the table looked like a very delicious game of Tetris.
We had duck, which came with a theatrical sauce pour and a puff of smoke that looked like a mini magic trick, mapo tofu, fried wonton, Szechuan chicken, crispy eggplant and sweet and sour chicken. It was good, solid Chinese food. Not the best I have ever had but exactly what my vacation soul needed. Sometimes comfort food wins over Michelin stars. Just my...
