A Mixed Experience at Las Corvinas de Don Jimmy

Review: Located inside the Mercado central, Las Corvinas de Don Jimmy caught our attention with its numerous 5-star ratings. While the food was indeed tasty, we found it to be overrated and overpriced compared to other nearby eateries.

We ordered two meals, both simple yet flavorful. Unfortunately, our experience was dampened as the fish in our dishes wasn't freshly fried. Observing other patrons enjoying freshly fried fish made us wish we had been as fortunate. Perhaps it was a case of the grass being greener on the other side! 😅 The Corvina used in the dishes was decently portioned and served with rice, potatoes, and ceviche.

The staff was friendly, but considering the availability of cheaper set menu options around town, we may explore other dining choices in the future. Las Corvinas de Don Jimmy offers tasty fare, but the overall value didn't quite live up to the high praise...

Food is average if not below, decent portion, and I enjoyed the flavour of the ceviche. The environment seemed clean and staff friendly. However, you can see in my pic that the fish is not freshly fried, it is all dried out. I saw some locals get served steaming hot food, so perhaps they serve fish that had been fried earlier to the tourists who don’t know any better...? Really a shame not to have freshly fried fish and there’s a big difference looking at the photos of older reviews, the portion of prawns in the ceviche has definitely decreased too. This is also more expensive than other places but overall I left satisfied as I had been very hungry after a few hours of walking.

Update: a few days later I ate at the other corvinas stall a bit further down and it was SO much better quality, freshness, and flavour. Avoid Jimmy’s, the reputation is a myth, and support others...

The traditional and well known "corvinas con papa" (croaker with potatoes). They have been in the history of the city for generations now, and the flavor and combination is awesome. They serve it with ceviche, really good to give the whole experience a smoother taste. Try it with lemon juice, it's the magical touch.

Portions are big. I haven't been able to finish it all, ever. After eating all that, you better go take a nap.

Accompany your dish with fruit juice, that is sold at the market too.

Also, don't forget you can get a ceviche recharge for free. I always need it because of the size of the portion. You need something...
