The most unique and enchanting hotel experience in Quito. Rarely, anywhere in the world and even in the finest boutique hotels, have I enjoyed a more outstanding and delightful hospitality experience.
The warm, kind and incredibly solicitous owner and proprietor, Dirk, represents the gold standard in personalized hospitality. He goes out of his way to ensure your comfort and ease. Not only did he wait up to personally greet us and carry our bags when we arrived at 2am, he allowed us to check in 12 hours early (we had reserved for the next day) and, with our return flight departing at 10:00pm, he arranged for us to use another room until 7pm that evening – in addition to arranging personal airport transfers. He is immediately responsive and genuinely attentive to his guests’ needs; whatever we asked for, he supplied within minutes and he was always available to offer valuable local advice and suggestions.
The hotel itself is exemplary. Housed in a beautiful historic building in Quito’s Old Town, Dirk and his partner spent more than 3 years lovingly restoring and reimagining the structure; the result is 7 exquisitely restored, and completely unique, individual apartments of incomparable charm. All the apartments – it does them a disservice to call them “suites” – preserve original architectural detail – high, wood-beamed ceilings, stone archways and brick walls – and introduce modern elements showcasing a refined and individual design sensibility. Each captivating unit is full of delightful detail - tasteful antiques mixed with contemporary furnishings, original artworks, vintage objets trouvés – and is wonderfully well equipped, with a full kitchen, a spacious, modern bathroom and a comfortable bed. For breakfast, each apartment is supplied daily with an array of provisions including a loaf of freshly baked bread from a local bakery, cheese, ham, cereals, yogurts, etc. – along with bottled water, beer and salted treats for anytime snacking.
Like an exquisite European country inn, with standards of hospitality and service far beyond the local norm, Old Town Quito Suites is an absolute gem. I would return to Quito just for the pleasure and delight of...
Read moreFour of us were travelling together and had a few days in Quito between Galapagos and the Amazon. We had two suites. As we drove from Quito to the Amazon we also rented the secure garage. The service at the hotel was extremely good. The staff were always on hand and able to help with any kind of query. The suites are quiet and very roomy and attractively decorated. We had a large bedroom, walk-in closet, decent size bathroom, a large kitchen and a comfortable good size living room area. The wifi is good and reliable. The rooms are decorated in a funky style, very pleasing without being over the top. Food for breakfast appeared every day and the rooms were kept spotlessly clean.
The location is reasonably central, so walking to most sites is straightforward - barring the elevation and the hills that make walking a bit of a strain if you are not used to elevation. The basilica and a number of shops, pharmacies and restaurants are an easy walk. The street the hotel is on has a number of hostels and low key restaurants. Cafe San Blas, a few doors up the street has pizza and pasta and although the menu is simple, the food is very good.
Like most large cities, being out at night walking can be a bit dicey. We were warned by locals (Are we that obviously gringos?) a few times to avoid certain areas. The last evening we went to Cafe Mosaico (more upscale, but highly recommended with good food and an amazing view from the patio) and we elected to take a taxi ($3) after being warned about continuing on the steps up to the cafe. It turned out to be a good choice as it was further up the steps than we guessed, and on the return taxi ride there were a few sketchy people around. None of this should deter you - it is a great place to visit and with some simple precautions it is perfectly safe.
One very minor quibble - the bed in our room tended to make a squeaking sound (not the frame - I think it is the mattress cover) when you rolled over. That tended to wake my partner - normally a pretty sound sleeper. But it is a minor issue... one that should not deter you from staying in this...
Read moreWe stayed here for nine nights in October & November, 2021. It is located within a ten minute walk to Voto Basilica, and the Old Town churches and shops. There are numerous restaurants, bakeries, and shops up and down the street from Old Town Quito Suites. The owner welcomed us and was there each day to answer any questions as we left for the day and greet us as we returned. From the outside the location looks like any other street in Quito, but once you step inside it is an old world oasis. Our apartment (Over the Bridge) had everything we needed to make us feel at home. The kitchen which was stocked with bread, cheese, lunchmeat, eggs, butter, jam, yogurt, granola bars, coffee, tea and fruit every day. There was a large fridge, microwave oven, stove, toaster, coffee pot and dishwasher (although they let us know that they would clean our dishes for us every day). Dirk, the owner, brought us something local and new each day, which was fun to try out new foods. The apartment had two bedrooms, two bathrooms with all of the ammenities needed, a kitchen, dining area and attached living area. We really enjoyed having a place of our own with space to spread out and relax at the end of the day. Dirk helped with getting covid tests for our return home, and giving us ideas on what to see in Quito. The building is secure and a key fob is given to access the building with a separate key to access your room. There is an open air courtyard in the center of the building which was nice to open the windows and get some fresh air, or listen to to rain. Old World charm in the middle of the city! We would definitely...
