I cannot believe it took 45 minutes from walking in the door to receiving the few sushi and sashimi I ordered. There were at least 10 different employees all standing around the bar area at one point. I had to wave at this blob of staff to be attended, and loudly say "excuse me" so they would move out of the way so I could pass thru the hall to the bathroom. The restaurant was less than half occupied, relatively few guests and many empty tables the entire time I was here on a Wednesday night.
Salmon and tuna were surprisingly decent quality, but salmon had a gross hidden scale in it. Octupus was really horrible, cold frozen dethawed chewy fishy flavor and texture...avoid it. Wasabi not terribly expired like most "sushi" places in Ecuador, good! I've had take-out from the Republica del Salvador location and I guess the rolls are decent if you like tempura and rice and mayonnaise, want to stuff your face, etc. The ginger iced tea was good, with less sugar, so at least the bartender knew what he was doing. Sadly the sashimi and sushi are extra cost per unit, not included in all you can eat.
Probabaly should be 3 stars, or in Ecuador even 4, but giving it 2 so management knows how inefficient / poorly the staff operates. I co-own a restaurant and I know it's not easy, but this amount of personnel + lack of speed and attentiveness is ridiculous. To be fair every time I waved someone over to ask why my food was taking so long, they were very corteous and promised to go speed things up so that was nice.
Nevertheless, I'd recommend Shibumi as by far the best sushi restaurant in Quito (and reasonably priced for value, unlike Osaka or Noe) after living here for a couple years. Go...
Read morePlease note that my review is based on my tastes in comparison to me living in the US and having been to Japan. The food is overall decent. The Ecuadorian fusion on the rolls takes away from the taste of the rice and the fish.
I found the portion of the fish in the rolls to be small. The taste of the rolls were not consistent. We ordered one roll with the red sauce on it which had a pretty good taste to it, and when we ordered it again it lacked the same consistency in taste and was not as good.
I eat a lot and for how much I ate the all you can eat was probably not worth the price. I will probably do individual rolls and Nigri the next time if I go again.
If you are from the US or any other country where you get free refills on drinks, that is not the case here in Ecuador. Even with the all you can eat, you don't get free refills on your beverages.
The service was ok. Basically after they take your order they never check on you to see if you want anything else. You have to go hunt the server down and ask for things. At first I thought it was common practice, but as I went to other restaurants they seemed to have a better service and would check on us semi frequently to see if we wanted anything else.
The ambience in the dining area to the right was fantastic. There was a large fireplace with some couches and lamps to take pictures with. Very welcoming atmosphere as far as the physical amenities...
Read moreThe worst restaurant I've been to in my month+ in Quito. The waiters were extremely slow, and ignored us several times. We had to aggressively wave to get their attention. Our waiter struggled to get me water as a drink because its not part of the all you can eat drinks. He stumbled and was rude, as if I offended him when I said I don't drink soft drinks. I didn't even care about being charged more, I just wanted water.
It took a long time between our sushi orders. Mostly because the waiter would just ignore us. The all you can eat menu is rather limited, to only Salmon as the fish. The sushi rolls were okay. Not bad, but nothing special.
Our last order took another 30+ minutes between placing it, and receiving it. We have 2 pieces left and the waiter wanted to charge us for it. I understand this is common place, and I hate food waste, but when you place a huge delay between ordering and serving food, you have deliberately caused...
