Groppi chain of Cafes was established in the 1900 ..in particular 1909 by a Swiss Pastry chef and chocolate maker Giacomo Groppi. It used to be a place for politicians, authors, writers and all celebrities and rich people in Egypt and Europe to meet and enjoy small cups of fine strong coffee with magnificent sweet confections. Ahmed Shawky, the most famous Poet used to have his breakfast every single day at Groppi at 10am sharp. This place becomes a landmark all over Egypt with its 5 branches in Cairo, but the time has left its mark. Today the place is not used to be as it was before after it has been taken by the government in late 1950's and it become a public sector company owned and manged by the government. Everything changed and nothing is the same, from the quality of sweets, foods and coffee, the service and the facilities(toilets and cleanliness) I usually go there to enjoy the fragrance of the old time and spend sometime drinking coffee (not good by all means) and imagine how it was before..I live a few minutes with my imagination and transform myself to the 1920's or 1930's until i finish my coffee and then I wake up for the noises outside and some unpleasant scenes around in and around the cafe. In general..the coffee is not good, the sweets are kind of average quality, the service could not be bad, the prices is relatively average. in terms of recommendation, It worth a visit if you never been there before or if you are near by and you want to stop for some rest and coffee and then you can make your decision about the place. I hope this is helpful. PS. my favorite branch used to be the one Kasr Enil square but it is closed for nearly 4 years for renovation! the favorite one is the one in the corner of Emad Eldin St and 26th July..both of them still have some old atmosphere ..ie high ceiling, old chandeliers and colorful walls. Last bit for you..don't forget to ask for your change when you pay because if you don't ..you won't...

Read moreRelatively high prices for the quality of cakes I really didn't like it, if I made red velvet cake at home I will do much better than the one they had served me, the reason I gave this place 2 starts rate is that they force you to take a cake along side with the drink I ordered so I choose red velvet one wich was below average quality and not fresh too, they charged 30 L.E for the cake along with service and tax, they also wanted me to pay for that small bottle of water which I didn't drink. Parking really...
