If I could give this restaurant 0 stars I would. I have been putting off this review for a while hoping I'd rationalize the situation and come to terms with a cultural difference or maybe something I missed upon my initial visit. This however hasn't happened.
First off, no English menu (not a issue, or a point reduction, just something to be aware of).
Secondly, myself and my partner ordered 2 dishes, hers was braised beef, which came to be very dry and tough to chew and little meat on the bones which were brought. The rice however was fantastic. My dish was a lamb rib on rice. They brought the lamb out, wrapped in tin foil on top of the rice. I fiddled with it a bit, got the lamb out, and again, mostly bones, no meat and some fat. I had maybe 20g of meat total on the plate. Again, rice was fantastic.
The server then brought out a large piece of fresh flat bread, and threw it on the table, no plate, just on the table. I wasn't too upset about it, but thought it was strange and was worried about hygiene and cleanliness of the restaurant. There was a plastic sheet on the table, however I'm unsure if it's changed after every meal. The bread was delicious.
2 coffees were ordered. One never showed, and the first arrived with a fly in the coffee. When brought to the attention of the server, he removed the fly and gave the cup back. They also were unaware that only one coffee was brought out. Either there was a communication issue or they honestly didn't know what was going on. When the bill came, both coffees were still on the bill. I paid in full, as I wasn't in the mood to argue 30 EGP.
This experience was odd, but the part that angered me, is when two people who came in after us ordered the same dish as I had. The server opened their tin foil for them and showed them the meat before tipping it onto their plate. Both individuals had exponentially more meat on their plates then myself and my partern's combined. The large flat bread that comes with the meals was delivered on a plate and placed on their table. If the treatment and interaction was the same or similar across the board, I'd have no issue. But it felt as if we were treated as second class and given the worst cuts of what they had.
Given the high rating of this restaurant, I want to say my experience was unique and you may have better luck. But I'd refrain from going back. I rarely leave negative reviews. But I felt it was necessary in...
Read moreIf you are Yemeni then this place is probably great. If you are a tourist visiting Egypt, it will be average at best. The restaurant was busy at 2pm on a Sunday and we were offered a poorly situated table near the cleaning station at the rear of the restaurant, hidden behind a pillar. We asked for a better table and sat only for a couple of minutes before being moved to a better table in the heart of the restaurant.
Most, 99% of customers, I assume are Yemeni, because I could see no Egyptians eating here. The seats are extremely well padded and comfortable. The staff are attentive although busy and a lovely lady took the time to explain the menu in English for me. Service was good, the staff are smartly dressed and the place looks clean. This restaurant is obviously a favourite amongst the local Yemini community and it has a quick turnover, canteen style eating feel about it. Tables are covered in a new, single use, thin plastic sheet prior to dining.
We had a fish dish which was very pleasant indeed. Due to people raving about it on reviews here, we also ordered the beef fassah (excuse the spelling). The portion was tiny, barely covering the bottom of the tagine dish. There were around 8 small shards of sharp bone in my tiny Portion as well as a good amount of fat, ligament and vein. The bread, as you can see from the photo was enormous, fresh, warm and delicious, the fresh baba gnoush was also excellent.
I had a chance to see other dishes served to those around me and quite frankly the meat dishes all looked very fatty, with a good amount bone and gristle, so probably less than half of it was actually edible and the chicken dishes looked mainly boiled as the skin had very little external colouring from cooking.
These are just my observations from my visit, both good and not so good. I wouldn't put you off going but I will not be returning. I have places within walking distance that are better suited for me in downtown Cairo and this was a...
Read moreI visited today because I saw the reviews on Google and decided to try. As a Nigerian the rice was bland but I brought my Nigeria spice(Shatta/Yaji) and it was 💯, the rice is soft and well cooked, I wanted coal grilled chicken but unfortunately my request was the Gas grilled chicken but it was also good 💯 The rice is 1/10 but with my spice 8/10 The grilled chicken 8/10 very tender. The small green salad had no onions so I was pleased because you have bad mouth smell with onions. Also there was a green shatta blended,i didn't like it. The Fahsa was my favourite 10/10 but the quantity was very small(The beef chunk was like shredded and not much for the price but definitely a must try) Our waiter Habiba was very wonderful and friendly, 5 stars for Habiba!!!❤️ The decorations are average not extravagant but I love the different sitting options. There is private on chair and floor and public with table and chairs. Also there is a place to pray. The toilet...
