we were craving chinese food in helsinki and saw that big bowl noodle had really high reviews, and it did not disappoint!
interior is modern and service was fast (food came in less than 10 minutes). you can watch the chef hand pull the noodles on the counter mirror so you know they are fresh! there is self-serve water, chili oil, and non-spicy paprika oil.
menu has a variety of noodle soups, dry mixed noodle, and fried noodle. you can choose your noodle type based on your thick/thin and flat/triangle/standard preference. extra noodle can be added for 2 euro and most dishes can add extra beef or pork for 2-3 euros. the noodles are around 13-15 euros which is reasonable given the dish is very filling.
the popular dish is the "lanzhou ramen" (looks like beef noodle soup aka niu rou mian when the broth is poured on top). however, we were eyeing the minced pork noodle with sesame sauce.
// minced pork with sesame sauce noodle (14.50) // the noodle and minced pork portion is very reasonable which makes it a filling dish. we got the triangular noodles which we enjoyed because it made them very chewy but not too thin or thick. the chili oil tastes really good mixed in with the noodle. i honestly was impressed and it was comparable to noodles i've tried back home in the san francisco bay area, california.
the only thing i can think of that would make this dish better is if there was more vegetables. there were two small pieces of bok choy; i saw some other dishes with fresh sliced cucumbers which i think would've really added to the dish. otherwise, we were very satisfied with...
Read moreI absolutely loved this place and was impressed from start to finish. We started with two side dishes: the tofu skin with chili oil and the crispy cucumbers. Both were delicious in their own way. The tofu skin had just the right amount of heat, with the chili oil adding depth without overpowering the delicate flavor of the tofu. The cucumbers were fresh, crunchy, and seasoned perfectly, a refreshing balance to the spicier elements of the meal. Together, these sides already set a very high standard.
For my main dish, I ordered number 23 with noodles type E. The noodles themselves were a highlight: perfectly cooked, with that slightly chewy texture that only comes from fresh, handmade noodles. They absorbed the flavors beautifully and paired wonderfully with the minced pork. The pork was seasoned so well that every bite felt rich and satisfying, without ever being too heavy. It was one of those dishes where you know you’ll be craving it again later.
My husband ordered noodles with chicken, and his dish was just as impressive. The chicken was tender and flavorful, working harmoniously with the same fresh noodles and seasonings. He was equally enthusiastic about his choice, which says a lot, since we often have different tastes.
What stood out most was how authentic everything tasted. This isn’t the kind of food you stumble across easily in Helsinki. It felt like a real gem, offering flavors that were both comforting and unique....
Read moreWe visited Big Bowl Noodle a few days ago, lured in by the glowing Google reviews and the promise of hand-pulled authenticity. The chef even recommended the Lanzhou Ramen with Beef (item 21), and we also tried the Spring Onion Oil Noodles with Prawns (item 24). With those choices, we thought we couldn’t go wrong. Oh, how naïve we were.
The good news first: the portions are generous. In fact, they’re so generous that we wondered if the restaurant’s real business model is to feed you once and make sure you don’t need to eat again until next week. The bad news: when you finally take a bite, you realize that quantity does not equal quality. Both dishes were bland, flat, and, frankly, disappointing—especially when compared with the same classics I’ve had in Mainland China.
Yes, the food is “authentic,” but authenticity alone isn’t enough. A dish can come straight from its cultural birthplace and still taste uninspired. Sadly, that was our experience here. For the price we paid, we were hoping for fireworks, but all we got was a wet sparkler.
We walked in curious and optimistic; we walked out full, but not in the way we’d hoped. Safe to say, this was a one-time...
