We were in Helsinki for the day on a cruise, and visiting Amos Rex turned out to be one of the highlights of our stop. If you’re into modern and contemporary art—or even if you just appreciate unique architecture—this place is absolutely worth your time.
What struck us first was the architecture. The building itself is mostly underground, but it’s topped with these futuristic domes that bubble up into the public square above. The effect is eye-catching and makes the museum feel like it’s part of the city’s flow rather than tucked away. You can even walk across the mounds outside before heading in—great for photos and fun for kids too.
Inside, the exhibits were bold and thought-provoking. Amos Rex doesn’t focus on traditional Finnish art—instead, it’s all about cutting-edge installations, immersive experiences, and experimental works. Some were interactive, some abstract, and a few were just plain mind-bending in the best way. It’s the kind of museum that encourages you to wander, wonder, and interpret.
The layout is clean, modern, and easy to navigate. Staff were friendly and helpful, and signage was clear in both Finnish and English. If you’re used to more classical galleries, this might be a fun shake-up—definitely more of a sensory and visual journey than a quiet look-and-read type museum.
Overall, Amos Rex offers something really different—a creative, playful break from the usual tourist circuit. Whether you're into art or not, it's an engaging experience that adds a modern twist to any...
Read moreAmos Rex is a stunning architectural landmark in the heart of Helsinki. Even if you don’t have time to go inside, its exterior is enough to leave a lasting impression. The distinctive bubble roofs create a unique landscape, perfectly combining modern architecture and public space. In March, when I visited, the morning light shone down, highlighting the delicate architectural lines. The location of Amos Rex is very convenient, right on Lasipalatsi Square, easily accessible by public transport. The area around the museum is also worth exploring. Lasipalatsi Square is a vibrant public space where you can relax, watch the city’s pulse and take beautiful photos. I was impressed by the harmonious combination of architecture, art and public space at Amos Rex. This is a must-see destination when you visit Helsinki, even if you only have time to admire its...
Read moreThe newly established Amos Anderson art museum consists of intricate and modern audiovisual art installations.
The art itself is beautiful and mesmerizing, but prepare to stand in line to get in, even as long as 2 hours (at its worst). The museum space is limited so they are careful not to let in too many people at once.
You can easily spend from 20 minutes up to even 2 hours enjoying the exhibition for there aren't too many installations (around 4 if I recall correctly).
People with conditions such as epilepsy, autism, severe migraine etc. should not visit this museum because the art installations may trigger seizures or episodes due to their extreme visual sensory stimulus.
Nevertheless, the exhibition's many rooms make great backgrounds and environments for picture taking and social media posts. (See picture below of me in one...
