Hanki — Restaurant in Rovaniemi sub-region

You will enjoy your experience at Hanki! We stopped by late afternoon to check the location and found them open. This was a surprise to us, as Google maps showed them as temporarily closed. We made a reservation for 8:30. We arrived and were seated immediately. We ordered Kimchi Stew and Bulgogi BiBimbop. We shared a broth soup with beef dumplings. The starter soup was delicious. It was a chilly evening, so this really hit the spot and warmed us up. The stew was as expected and they decreased the spiciness as requested and so it was perfect. I usually get dolsot bibimbop (in the heated cast iron bowl), but this was delicious also. The ingredients were fresh for all the food. I should mention that my spouse is Korean American and we eat a lot of Korean food in the metropolitan Washington DC area. European and UK Korean restaurants usually don’t measure up to American standards, but in this case they did so. Also, to be considered is that Rovaniemi is not a major city and to find a good Korean restaurant was very surprising. This restaurant is a true gem. If we lived in Rovaniemi, Hanki would be our go-to restaurant. It’s a traditional, family-run place, which will not leave you disappointed.

We were lucky to visit Hanki on our first day, and we couldn’t resist to go back every single day. We tried almost every single plate on their menu, my highlight was the “spicy pork”, which I had three days in a row! Their “salmon avocado”, “grilled chicken”, “bibimbamp” and “kimchi stew” were also amazing. They also offer lots of great vegan options.

Lastly, it was not only for the food that we went back again and again, the place is very cosy, every single corner is taken care of. There’s a small garden, pieces of art in their wall and you can just stare at the snowy landscape while enjoying your meal. Their dishes are also a piece of art, as they are beautifully decorated and their different sides create a perfect harmony of flavours.

This is a place that stays in your heart! Do not think twice about visiting.

While looking for restaurants in Rovaniemi i was surprised to see a restaurant rated 4.9 and that too with many many reviews. Hence, I was intrigued to try out this place. Unfortunately on my first attempt I reached there 20 mins before closing hours and the hosts politely informed that they will be closing soon. I tried tonight again out of sheer curiosity, and I am glad that I did. We ordered 3 starters - fried chicken, fried salmon and creamy prawns- each of them were better than the other. The balance of sauce and spices were on point. As a chef I know it is a hard task to master, my best regards to the chef in the kitchen.

Coming to the main course we ordered the grilled chicken with sautéed veggies, it came with a serving of rice and was equally tasty. To finish things off we ordered Summer Rovaniemi, a unique blend of fruits and vanilla ice cream. Overall it was a culinary delight.
