Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna, Rovaniemi — Hotel in Rovaniemi sub-region

We stayed for 4 nights in January. The hotel is situated on a pedestrianised street right beside the river and the number 8 bus stop which circles the airport, town and Santa Claus village. The hotel is very central and only 10 - 5 minutes from Artikum and Piilke science centres (which are fascinating and not to be missed!). We had a standard room which was actually bigger and better than the photos online appear. The northern lights lighting effect was charming and very restful. Beds were comfortable, clean and tea/coffee making facilities perfect. The buffet breakfast was excellent - hot sausages, eggs boiled and scrambled, bacon, lots of fresh fruit, porridge, cheese, ham, croissants, other breads and pastries, fresh yoghurt, berry "soup" and my new favourite, lingonberry porridge with added seeds and raisins. We ate dinner in the restaurant twice and it was really delicious. We were out and about a lot, so unfortunately didn't get to experience the sauna. The standout however are the staff. All the ladies on the reception desk, the cleaning staff and restaurant staff are unfailingly cheerful, helpful and informative. They really make it feel like a home from home. We lost a snood and gloves. We mentioned it to the cleaning staff, and also to reception on the way in to breakfast. Two minutes later the receptionist practically sprinted in to us in the restaurant with the missing items. We would absolutely return...

This hotel is a real gem within Rovaniemi. It's brilliantly placed at the river end of the main street, so just a short, easy walk to all the shops and restaurants/eateries. Its staff are all friendly and welcoming and the room has a stocked bar fridge (not used by us), tea and coffee making facilities in the room and facial tissues and a hair dryer in the bathroom. They even had an iron, ironing board and a 12 inch desk fan in the cupboards. A large tv is mounted on the wall of the adequate sized room. The Nordic style beds were also comfortable. Don't let the thin mattress deceive you. We had a buffet breakfast included in our stay and it was as good as you'll get anywhere. Definitely my favourite hotel in Rovaniemi. Lovely and cosy in the winter - I haven’t tried it in the summer. Rooms are warm and comfortable. Shower was good, beds were nice and soft. Not a huge amount of space but absolutely enough. The receptionists are lovely and the hotel is in an excellent location.||At certain times of year, it’s extortionately overpriced, but that’s down to tourist demand.||The attached bar and restaurant are excellent. Bar has a good selection of beers and a good atmosphere. Likewise the restaurant, while somewhat expensive, is also very nice with delicious food and a superb atmosphere.
