Les Deux Garçons — Restaurant in Aix-en-Provence

I visited this restaurant years ago with my late husband,and had the most wonderful evening with lovely food and,great service.Last week,I was on holiday again in Aix,and having booked a table well in advance,was looking forward to a lovely evening. I was so disappointed -we could not eat in the main restaurant as a large party were expected,so were pushed into a very shabby side room,which smelt of tobacco.Eventually found a table outside where we were ignored for about 45 mins.Finally asked what we would like to eat,we were informed that lobster was off the menu.At which point we left. Talking to the manager of the hotel where we were staying,he said he would never recommend Les Deux Garcons to any of his visitors. How the mighty...

Finally! Just when I thought the legendary French style of customer service was extinct, we were treated to it here. We attended at 11am and the weather was chilly so we asked for a sunny table on the patio. Once seated, the server promptly brought us water and bread. When we requested breakfast we were told we were sitting in the wrong section and the server pointed to an identical table a few feet away that we should sit at. When we moved, a different server gave us breakfast menus, but the bread and water were gone. When this waiter returned for our order, he told us it was too late for breakfast and had no food suggestions for us at all. At least he got our coffee order wrong. And our France experience...

This restaurant sits on Cours Mirabeau, which is a main tourist 'square' (just a really long rectangular one.)

The staff was very nice, the service was great.

The food... a bit on the meh side. The foie gras was dry and a bit on the mealy side, while the fruit jam it was served with had a strong taste that reminded me of cigarette tobacco. The steak was tough and rubbery with the slightly think bits on either end being cooked to my liking but the (largest) middle bit was over done. The dessert (called a strawberry pie, but more of a torte) was the only part of the meal that was really good.

Over all, it was not the worst restaurant experience I have ever had, but it was far...
