Highly recommend Au Coq Bleu. Very friendly staff, that is quick to understand your pace and desires, invisible when needed, there when needed - just right. It's a small restaurant, and the atmosphere is just right, as you'll be close to others, in simple setting, with no table cloth - just great food and wines.
We had a fantastic dinner for 2. Our starters where snails, we each got a diffrerent take both classic with persil and garlic, swimming in butter in their shells, and a curry-cognac version, which were prepared to scoop out of the dimpeled plate, and had a plethora of tastes with Indian curry spices to start, cognac middle and the earthy snail taste to end. Both dishes were wonderful, really would depend on how classic you'd want to keep things.
Main dish we both steered away from the signature dishes, poached eggs, coq au vin or boeuf, as we have a weakness for Citeaux monastry cheese, it's easily one of the best cheeses of France, and the burgers the chef created may well be the best you get get in and around Beaune. The bun was prefect, soft and not too dry, the burger using Irish minced meat, and was juicy and tasty and succulent cooked perfectly, the Citeaux was deliciously combined with caramelised onions and the dish with wonderfully seasoned thick chips was delicious for every bite. Fresh lettuce with generous helping of just the right dressing.
We went for a very fairly priced Patriarche Mercure premier cru and the 2016 (!) red tasted fantastic with our selection.
The cheese plate we ordered was augmented a little bit, perhaps as we were the first to start desert to compel the other groups to food envy. And rightfully so! The cheese plate had a generous combination of Brillat Savarin, Epoisses Berthaut (with a spray of Marc de bourgogne in what looked like a perfume spray), our fave Abbaye de Citeaux, and two flavours of Tome, aux Fleurs (yes, with violins) and a more aged Tome, all from the famous fromagerie Hess just around the corner.
We closed with a Kir Royal and a Marc de Bourgogne, the latter served in a nice glass that had a cooler below it.

Read moreThis was the first of four restaurants that we dined at while in Beaune for an Anniversary trip and the bar was set so incredibly high after dining at Au Coq Bleu. Sometimes in culinary pursuits, it's best to limit what you do, but to do what you do...very well, and that's exactly the impression that I got from our intimate and inviting experience we had on our first evening.
The Coq façon Gaston Gérard was a masterpiece in elevated Burgundy comfort cusine that I will be hard pressed to experience again, which will haunt me for the rest of my days. It was amazing. Fork tender, rich, savory...delightful.
My wife had the Beef Bourguignon and it was a stunner that was flavorful; my only wish would be that it was served with a buttery accompaniment of mashed potatoes, but the tagliatelle sufficed!
The restaurant setting is comfortable, with a small room that sat 20 or so patrons. They do one seating at lunch and another at dinner...no rushing to accomodate a second service, which I appreciated.
My only regret is that this restaurant is not in my hometown of...
Read moreThis is our second year coming to Au Coq Bleu. We booked in advance to not be disappointed this year. It is hard to imagine a more pleasurable dining experience.
Every dish here is thoughtfully prepared by Le Chef. He takes great pride in coming out for feedback. Whether you order what you know or leave yourself in his hands, every dish is rich with flavor and served fresh.
The wine list is well curated and fairly priced. Many wines are served by the glass, but they have a great selection of bottles at every price range. We let the staff choose and were not disappointed.
This is a place that makes it possible to enjoy the meal. It’s deliberate (slow, maybe if not what you are used to?). It’s thoughtful. It’s a real meal prepared by real people. It’s hard to imagine greater kindness. It’s a real treat if that’s what...
