Dining at Brasserie Chez Jules in Boulogne ought, by all appearances, to be a safe bet. The setting promises classic French brasserie charm, the menu leans reassuringly on steak and fish, and the wine list gestures toward familiarity. But what unfolded was an exercise in culinary underwhelm.

My steak arrived not looking the part, it offered little in flavour beyond the faint memory of the grill. It was neither offensive nor distinguished, the sort of dish that seems to exist only to remind you of better steaks eaten elsewhere. Across the table, the fish fared no better — technically cooked but unremarkable, lacking any sparkle or suggestion that the kitchen had thought beyond the routine. For what was charged, one expected at least a whisper of finesse.

The wine, alas, was the afternoon's true disappointment: corked, flat, and stubbornly lifeless, it robbed the meal of the conviviality that good Bordeaux or Burgundy so effortlessly provides.

And yet, salvation of sorts came in human form. The staff, warm and attentive to a fault, worked with the grace and generosity one longs for in dining out. Their charm stood in sharp relief against the mediocrity of the kitchen and cellar, and one suspects many guests return for precisely this kindness rather than for the plates themselves.

In the end, Chez Jules is a place buoyed by people, not by food. For those willing to overlook an uninspired menu and a wine list in need of more rigorous attention, the welcome is genuine. For the rest, Boulogne offers richer rewards just a few...

This was a bad experience on a different level. We sat outside and we're immediately greeted with a loud atmosphere. Eventho the waiters are almost not impossible to catch we still did our order. I must say the waiters are overall friendly just very hard to talk to eventho there isn't a lot of people.

We were a bigger group and mostly ordered burgers. The salad was unwashed, with literal dirt in it, the order was messed up two times (first one isn't nice but still tolerable but a second time with the same meal...) as the meat was both times undercooked eventho we asked for completely done (it was for a child), no seasoning at all and even Oysters had still splitters in them.

The fries were tolerable. Till we found a hair fried onto it ... This was the last straw for us.

After we were seemingly upset about the whole situation we were immediately asked to pay and where rudly treated.

It was a really underwhelming and pricey experience I wouldn't recommend or do it again. I get everyone has bad days to but having a dish on the card which seemingly doesn't include any kind of seasoning is...

Main perks: HUGE portions and open Sunday evening! My friends and I were passing through BSM on a Sunday evening, didn’t arrive until 8pm so choices of open places were limited. Found this GORGEOUS little establishment. Clean and classy with SUCH a friendly wait staff, very helpful and patient with our poor French.

The food was delicious. Quite a diverse menu! We tried pizzas, moules, and pasta, all portions were extremely generous, food tasted fresh and well made, and actually really nicely presented too. (And we were supplied with loads of bread, olives, and peanuts while we waited.) A tad bit above our budget for the evening but we were so pleased we stayed for an extra round of drinks!

I would make a place like this a regular dining spot if we had one in our town. Would be happy to bring other friends here, definitely recommend to the weary...
