I regularly stay overnight at the budget ibis to catch the early morning train. I know there is a food hall of many restaurants, but you will not be dissapointed if you stop here for food. To be honest, it is not an "English pub", to come into, to stand at the bar and consume alcohol, (but I suppose you could).! Start with the basics, there "french-fries" are "chips",! These are chopped up, real potatoes. The garlic bread is not overpowered with garlic, so a future journey is not a reminder, imbibed with the aroma of garlic,! For me there is only one main course, (I am an omnivore,!) "La Carbonade Flamande", a Flemish beef stew. Rich and flavoursome, served with ginger flavoured bread, and a couple of small bread rolls, to mop up the juice.! It is served with a small side salad, just to make it seem like a "balanced diet.!" and chips. There is an amazing selection of "beers", today I chose the "Cherry Chouffe", it was rather pleasant, not too fruity. Most of the "beers" are "blonde", which I think of as lagers, (yes I am old, and Scottish, a beer is dark in colour,!) They must clean their coffee machines on a regular basis, as the coffee is pleasant, (and you get a wee chocolate served with it,!). Oh,! And the staff are pleasant and professional, even with my lack of the French language. Yes, I will stop here the next time I pass through the tunnel. PS, Sorry if my picture is half consumed, I had started eating before I decided to post this, and the second picture shows the aftermath of a clean plate,! Enjoy,!
Edit 4/2024 The hotel is now called "B&B"( Same place different name), it has been modernised. The Black Bull Pub is still here My beer of choice is now "Chimay Bleu" Yes, I still eat the "Carbonade Flamande", I'm Scottish I need my "red meat and tatties".! I visit four times a year as I travel back and fore to Britain, in March and September, the staff change, but they are always friendly and professional. Yes, I...
Read moreWent to the bar to buy drinks and after 10 minutes of standing at the bar waiters looking at me leaning up against the bar accross from me was told it was table service, we waited 20 minutes to have our order taken and then watched as French people were served at the bar, got their drinks and sat down. I went back to the bar, and was told that our drinks are on the way and then ushed to my seat rudely with a shoo hand gesture. Waited another 20 minutes and returned to the bar to speak to a lady pouring the drinks who said she hadn't received our order, the waiters that were standing around the bar just shrugged and carried on talking amongst themselves, they herd what i said to the lady, the waiters were more interested in finishing their half hour conversation. It is the first time we as a family have ever experienced xenophobia and felt very unwelcome. Highly recommend...
