This here is a really amazing restaurant. It's very close to the center and all the action, but still seems to be a bit of a secret, even though just around the corner from old town.

Reservations are recommended. And so did we. Our English Bulldog was welcome inside as well.

Besides à la carte choices there are fixed-price menus. Starter/main, main/dessert or all three. The menu looked promising, so we chose all three courts. And that was a great choice. For under 40 Euros a person you get three wonderful dishes. For starters we've had the octopus-salad and the grilled foie gras. Octopus was cooked to perfection, fresh and crunchy salad. The Foie Gras was a winner as well. Nicely grilled, silky and smooth inside. As it should be.

Before the starters we got served a complementary Amuse-Bouche. Bacalau and tomato cazpacho. A great start.

For the mains we've had the grilled fish with mushrooms and potatoes and the beef in wine sauce with veggies and fries. Both meals again cooked to perfection. The chef knows what he's doing here. Fish cooked to the point and the beef oh so tender, nice wine reduction to go with. Had a bottle of wine to go with.

For desserts we've had a trio of ice cream, macaron and mousse and a chocolate fendant with ice cream. All pieces of art. But not only good looking, great tasting as well.

All dishes here were perfectly prepared. Kudos to the chef. But also the staff was wonderful...

We had a pretty hard time finding a nice restaurant in Colmar serving an affordable 3-course meal out of the ordinary heavy Alsace cuisine every restaurant here seems to be serving. After going through different menus for over an hour we are so glad we found 'Les Racines', which offered a more inspiring 3-course meal for € 32. We very much enjoyed all courses: both starters (a beer gaspacho bursting with flavor and a wonderful dorade tartare) were refined and tasty, the entrees (a delicious dorade filet pan-seared crispy and rich tender meat stew with vegetables) were a success and the desserts (biscuits with chocolate foam and pear and chocolate with a cinnamon garnish) were top notch. Evey dish was presented elegantly, service was very friendly and we enjoyed spending the evening nice and quietly: super comfortable! We enjoyed the wines our waitress recommended and spent a delightful evening here. Highly...

Absolutely appalling service and worst customer service we have ever experienced. We waited over an 1hour 45 mins and our mains never arrived. When we politely asked how much longer the wait would be the waitress became aggressive and advised she couldn’t provide a time. We politely advised we would be paying for our drinks already consumed and would be leaving due to the extensive time waited with no mains. The waitress and the chef became very aggressive and started yelling and abusing us in the restaurant and saying if we didn’t want to wait we should have gone to McDonald’s.

We appreciate that quality food takes time however the treatment and expectation that customers should wait nearly 2 hours for food is appalling.

We would never recommend this place to anyone...

We have been coming here for years and it never disappoints. The ingredients are fresh, service attentive, tasting menu great value for quantity. We now stay in smaller towns outside of Colmar when visiting but will always make a special trip just to enjoy Les Racines. Please don't ever change! Always such a wonderful experience. It's in a sort of hidden area of Colmar, but don't let that stop you, go, you'll be glad you did. 2024 Update: I've been coming since 2017 and it never disappoints. Price points are still wonderful for the quality and portions. I come to Colmar for this restaurant. The seasonal flavors are always sure to delight. I still appreciate that it is a bit off the beaten path, especially in summer. 5 stars. Very nearly perfect.
