Café des Jacobins — Restaurant in Lyon

Do not go here. All the good reviews are clearly from people who are not tourists. The rudest experience I have ever had. Firstly when they seated us, they seated us right next to the bathroom, even though they had a decent amount of seating inside. Then, we sat there for 15-20 minutes without anyone approaching us. Instead, they cleaned the bathroom. When the young male waiter finally came around he said “are you ready to order?” to which we replied “could we please get some menus?” The menu is very limited if you cannot read French as you cannot read the specials board. When we did order, the food was very bland, the steak tartar, while plentiful, was pretty much raw meat with no salt or flavour. The steak we ordered as “medium rare”, was a burger patty. This restaurant, established in 1907, carries a sense of history, but unfortunately, that doesn’t guarantee great food. The dishes were mediocre (priced on the lower side for the location). While on holiday, I was hoping to experience authentic local flavors but was drawn in by the restaurant’s age without prior research. Sadly, the food fell short of my expectations. The dessert and coffee were the only highlights, comparatively speaking.

The overall cleanliness left much to be desired. Toward the end of my visit, I noticed a waiter cleaning the restroom and leaving the door open. Unfortunately, I saw how the toilet seat and floor were cleaned, which was quite uncomfortable. Thankfully, I had already finished eating by then but left...

I stopped here for lunch by chance as it’s a great location, was full outside and I could hear some diners speaking French so thought it might be ok. It took a while for anyone to greet me, but I did eventually get a lovely seat. I had the steak frittes salade, which was just passable as the steak was not tender. For 15,50 euros it was reasonable for the average quality the dish. I went to pay inside but they busied themselves with other things, though they definitely had time to serve me. Another person was also waiting to pay, we agreed it was pretty hilarious that they didn’t seem to want our money! 10 mins later, we finally got there….
