What a treat in the heart of the gastronomic capital of the world. Japanese cuisine at its best! Both lunch and dinner are done with the care and exceptionalism you would expect from a quality Japanese restaurant.
It was a two for one special for me yesterday, meaning both lunch and dinner. For the record, I should take a picture of the menus to capture the actual names used.
For lunch I had Tataki Don lunch special; this includes miso soup and an accompaniment. I paired the meal with a bottle of Kirin for good measure. The meal came out fairly quickly, about 10 minutes, and look rather impressive. The Tataki Don was beautiful; the hue of the raw tuna flesh, sprinkled sesame seeds, and strips of nori were appealing to the eye. The visual spectical did not disappoint my taste buds; fresh tuna, a hint of sesame, very mild/light vinegar from the rice. A well balanced dish, I tried a hint of soy sauce and only a hint...it doesn't need it and I would argue that it disrupts the delicate balance of the dish itself. The miso soup had it's typical cloudy essence with what looked to be a much fresher/lighter version of seaweed. The taste was not as intense as one would typically be used to. The accompaniment was well executed and very tasty. I'm not sure what it was, but it certainly was enjoyable...someone help me out with the picture. For dessert I chose the green tea cake...a touch of sweetness, as one would expect, dense texture, and subtle taste of macha.
Google, if you're reading, can we break out the comments section for breakfast, lunch, and dinner...maybe sections for different reviews by the same person? It feels like I'm writing a book here!
Dinner was the 5-course, plus dessert, degustation for 49€. And it was worth every penny...a journey of delicate, fresh, and intricate flavors. This may require my laptop to write the rest of this...
Read moreDisappointing lunch. We had high expectations by looking at the photos on line of all of the dishes. These dishes were not available. We were there for lunch and they had a very very limited menu on a chalk board of pre-prepared foods. We ordered the Udon bowl with Tempura. $17.5 Tempura was previously cooked and soggy with only one small shrimp. Second dish was called on the menu as Tuna Tartare, It was far from it. $18.50 Simply a small handful of cubed less than sushi grade tuna over rice. No seasonings at all. This is the first time I felt ripped off at a Lyon restaurant. After we ate we stopped by a sandwich shop for more food as we were still hungry. Definitely won't return. There two many great restaurants in Lyon to waste your time...
Read moreSeems nice but... I had to wait 45 minutes for a takeout and paid 19 EUR for a tiny cup of miso and shrimp tempura over rice (of which there were only 3 pieces of medium-sized shrimp, and 7 slices of veg - I had to eat again when I got home!). They do not sell raw fish sushi for takeout (why not, everyone else does?), which really limits the options. I can't recommend this restaurant - there are many faster and cheaper sushi restaurants in Lyon with quality food. Nice...
