Glad we finally got to go here! Being big on my google reviews, our last dinner in Cassis had to be special and La Nonna D'oro stuck out. We had walked past it several times over the last couple of days and it was always full which is always a good sign for a restaurant with such healthy competition. We had pre booked through their restaurant website and although a thunderstorm had just passed through there were still plenty of people around window shopping restaurants so I'm glad we had pre booked.
The initial greeting was excellent and we were seated at a good table overlooking the other diners and the water but also sheltered from the constant rain.
The menus were presented and the drinks orders taken which were brought out in good time.
Having a 4 year old with us had made looking at restaurants tough, and it seems like La Nonna D'oro were ahead of the game. Their kids menu as well as the rest of the menu was short but sweet, I had seen a lot of restaurants in the area trying massive menus with little success but it seems like they have kept it simple and sweet. We only ordered mains, but judging from the "I'll have what she's having" loud American in the table next to us the entrees were a hit also. I'm sorry to say I'm not a fan of seafood which makes being I'm the south of France difficult, but again I was well catered for and ordered the steak rare with the mushroom sauce. My (french) wife ordered the prawn pasta which looked amazing and all 3 meals were presented well including the kids fish and chips. My steak was cooked to perfection, I was a chef for 15 years and this was probably the best steak I've had in atleast 10 years. The sides were well flavoured but lacking a little seasoning - which is fine because salt, ground and cracked pepper were on the table. The Cepe (morels) sauce was quite heavy and could have used a cut down with some alcohol or thinning down with some other mushrooms or liquid but for me it was delicious, just very rich and tasted like the sauce had been made from dried cepes, not fresh or frozen so a bit heavy and dirty, but fine. The vegetables were delicious and fresh and cooked to perfection as well. The wife's prawns were cooked well and the cream sauce was not to heavy and the pasta was fresh. Dessert was brought out for the 4 year old and it went down a treat, it was elegantly served and was a good portion size for him to be satisfied by about 3/4 through.
All-in-all the best meal and experience we have had in the south of France this trip and I could not recommend it higher over any of the other local restaurants.
The staff were amazing and bilingual friendly as well so I didn't feel so stupid not speaking any French.
Thanks for an amazing experience, see...
Read moreMy fiancée and I ate here in our last night in Cassis. At first we were hopeful that we would have a nice experience, we found two items on the menu, both steaks that we were eager to try. The young lady that was helping us was very sweet at first, unfortunately things went south pretty quickly.
The filet was great, but the Black Angus steak we ordered was very chewy and just not good, when we politely asked our waitress if we could simply return the Angus for a 2nd filet so we could both enjoy our meals, she washed her hands of us and tagged in either her Manager or owner who basically told us that we HAD to eat it and refused to take it off the bill because "the meat is good". The young lady probably had little input regarding the return policy, HOWEVER she also ignored our table for the remainder of the experience which she definitely could have controlled...
I find it shocking that a town that is probably very dependent on tourism dollars would treat paying customers in this way. Had the establishment made an effort to fix the problem and make us happy, we would be singing it's praises and spreading the word to our friends.
However, they chose to go another route and not value us as paying customers, so here we are.
Be prepared if you eat here to eat it or else!!

Read moreThis spot is in a beautiful location on the water, but the service is awful. I booked a reservation for my girlfriend and I at noon. My booked tour ended up finishing at 12:30. When we approached the host, before even speaking, he looked at us and said “can’t take you we are full.” We then explained we had a reservation (host was already walking away as we were speaking) and he said we missed the reservation time so he couldn’t take us. However, there were plenty of open seats. He didn’t even tell us to wait 10 minutes, just turned us away.
Since we were late, this wouldn’t have bothered me but a group of 3 Americans (like us) from our booked activity walked in right after our host denied us and he seated them without question - no reservation. They were as shocked as we were that we were turned away. My girlfriend even spoke French to him while the other American party spoke English. I have no other clue as to why this host would turn us away so rudely but we were the only non-white people in the area. We ended up eating at Le Bistro Quai - much better service! Same...
