We did make a reservation, but obviously due to the language barrier it didn't come across that well. We ordered a large table for 14 with space for a wheelchair unfortunately when we got Chez Gilbert their was a large step, to big to carry the wheelchair over as the chair ways about 120kg on it's own. So we had to split the table, 4 outside and remaining which we did have a table downstairs they put upstairs, so completely split us up. As it was our last night in Cassis we just went for it as not easy to accommodate 14 in short notice. Food came out in all different times, really mixed up some mains arrived when when starters hadn't been received. Thought they had forgotten my main a fish stew, their speciality dish apparently when the table was empty (rather bland i must say) you can see in one of the pictures. Overall not a place for kids, my lot were keen to get out as they didn't enjoy the kids meals. Burger and chips and fish and chips. They called it something else but that was was what it was. Waiters English was very poor, so very hard to order we were using Google translate to read the menu. Maybe a place to try if you're a couple where you can relax a bit more. Or learn French tonal much higher standard. Obviously the bill was into 4 figures, what made it worse people were still hungry as they didn't enjoy the food. Were hollering at me when they saw a pizza parlour whilst walking...
Read moreI, a solo female traveler went to this restaurant with high expectations but they were totally flat. I have been to many fine restaurants in France and in the world but no where it was disappointing. I had their Bouillabaisse, the most famous dish of the region and what this restaurant is known for. Food was totally blah and cold. This is a soup, it should be warm at least. It felt like you are having left overs and not freshly prepared food. Not just that, the staff was very rude when informed of the quality of the dish. When you are charging 70 Euro for a dish, not just good food, excellent service comes with it. When I walked in (no reservation) the maitre de mimicked what I said and made fun. I neglected it as humor or being too friendly. Actually, it shouldn't be that way, I am a customer. But knowing their response later when I told them about the food, it looked as if they did not respect or appreciate me for whatever reason. But I can guess some. I asked for the manager, and then the contact of the owner. The waiter said, he is the owner and a manager. I am not sure about that. Hope the manager reads the review and reaches out to me. There were two couples, both French and they were in agreement about the quality of the food. Not being French, I asked them if that is how it should be and they...
Read moreI think anyone reviewing this place and giving above three stars is either being paid to do so by the owner, or they are wrong in the head. Dreadful food. Tuna improperly prepared, covered in sinew and stomach lining on the plate, served with cheap horrid vegetables of a shape that you know they were cooked from frozen. Coute de bouef, ordered medium, came out blue and unrested, blood covering the plate. Dessert of tarte tatin, no flavour whatsoever other than sugar. Watching them prep their bouillabaisse beside the back door rather horrible, pot of soup on an electric hob, chucking off bits of grey fish into bowls. Arsey owner being very rude. Places like this are an embarrassment to a beautiful town such as cassis. I simply dont understand why a strip of restaurants overlooking the harbour are allowed to be such poor quality for the price you pay. They embarrass the name of french cooking. It ruins the town. The only good places in the Cassis are off the front. These people do not deserve their licenses. Go to a back alley. Find the other places. Dont give these slags your money. Woke up this morning to violent food poisoning, if I had any sense, I would bag up the contents of my toilet and deliver it to mr gilbert in a bag, so he...
