I chose Au Top to celebrate my 30th birthday because it was one of the few places in Paris advertised to stay open until 2am on Sundays – something I confirmed both online and by asking directly. I planned the evening specifically to celebrate turning 30 at midnight, so this detail was crucial.
Our reservation was at 21:30, and most guests arrived by 21:45 – I even have Uber receipts to prove it. As is normal at a celebratory dinner, we took a bit of time to settle in, order drinks, and enjoy the moment. At 22:30, we began ordering, only to be informed without prior warning that the kitchen was closing and we could no longer order starters. After some discussion, the waiter/manager reluctantly allowed us to order, but not without making us feel like it was a huge inconvenience and that he was doing us a favor.
We ignored the poor attitude because I didn’t want to let it spoil the night. We continued, ordering multiple dishes, including large steaks to share. Then, without warning, we were informed the restaurant would close at midnight – contradicting what we were told beforehand and what’s listed online. The same manager said he’d “make an exception” and let us stay until 00:30 – again, treating it like a personal favor rather than standard hospitality.
The final straw came at 23:30, when the staff brought out my birthday cake and lit the candles – a full 30 minutes before my actual birthday. In my culture, this is considered bad luck, and I had explicitly chosen this venue to celebrate at midnight. I kindly asked if we could wait, and reminded him he had just said we could stay until 00:30. But he insisted the restaurant would be closing soon and ignored my request.
What happened next was completely unacceptable: without permission, the chef cut the cake I hadn’t even had the chance to blow out or take a photo with. This level of disrespect and lack of communication was shocking. My sister and I were stunned. When we tried to explain how upsetting and inappropriate this was, the manager doubled down and blamed us for being “late” – even though we were within a completely reasonable time frame for a 21:30 dinner reservation.
He gave a half-hearted apology, but it was laced with excuses and deflection. At that point, we paid immediately and left. For the first time ever, we didn’t leave a tip – not out of pettiness, but because the service did not deserve even a cent. (And our tips are usually very generous)
Thankfully, the bar across the street welcomed us warmly, and we managed to turn the night around. But Au Top single-handedly ruined what was meant to be a special and joyful celebration. I will never go back, and I strongly advise others not to rely on this place for important events. Hospitality is about respect and communication – Au Top failed on...
Read moreThis restaurant is an EMBARRASSMENT of epic proportions. We came to Acte II with my Parisian friend who had been here many times with excellent experiences. We knew something was off and should have left but didn't because we were with a group and knew it would be difficult to find another reservation so late. Here is what occurred: The waiter brought a menu that was NOT the menu displayed on the website and told us the bartender is not working and therefore we cannot order any cocktails. We had to order 3 different bottles of wine before the waiter found one that was in stock. The waiter told us the chef asked if we could wait until a larger group had been served to place our order. After about an hour we were finally able to order The chef came over and told us he ran out of shrimp because the larger group ate them all The chicken brochette was brought to us completely undercooked (raw) and when we returned it, the chef rolled his eyes, and threw it back onto the grill with no apology, and also gave us the SAME, partially cut into skewer, rather than prepare a new one When we got the bill it still had the charge for the shrimp that we never got because it ran out and no courtesy of any credit as an apology for al that had occurred that night. When my Parisian friend approached the chef on our exit and complained to him, he blew his cigarette in her face and said to her sarcastically .... "Did you think this was a restaurant gastronomique?!"
Um, YES, actually, we did because this is how you present yourself on your website, This was seriously the most horrible, shameful dining experience I have ever had ANYWHERE, The owners and chefs should hang their heads in shame, how dare they treat customers this way or think anything like this was acceptable. You deserve to go out of business, DO...
Read moreIt felt very promising when we arrived. We were booked to go as part of a group. We were gobsmacked by the prices and only 5 starters and mains to choose from. The steak wqs something like €80.
For those prices you expect excellent service. Despite being friendly, mostly, it wasnt. Our waitress took our order by memory, didn't write anything down and insisted she didn't need to, table of 10, and then came back and checked who was having what a number of times. It felt silly.
We ordered 2 bottles of wine and then tried to repeat order and they didn't have the same wine. This kept happening. They didn't have much of any wine or it wasn't chilled.
We waited for so long for our starters that lots of wine was ordered by the table and the bill just kept building. I never saw the wine list so I had jo idea what was being ordered but we had so many different wines it was ridiculous. An hour at least for our food. At least. Maybe 90 minutes.
Basically for the prices we paid, and I was horrified by the bill, the services and selection should have been exceptional. It was far from that.
Also it's on the 5th floor and half way through the meal the owner of the building turned off the elevators. I have no ides why but one of the staff told us. Madness.
I dont recommend it unless you have time and money to burn.
Lovely view and...
