I am sad to write this review. My husband and I came here after being recommended by a friend, we were unfortunately disappointed.
The ribeye steaks we ordered were the toughest I have ever had, and completely unseasoned. The green beans were extremely over cooked, and the “salad” was just five or six pieces of lettuce with a spoon of dressing thrown on top. Worst of all, was the service. Our first server was exceedingly rude, and was clearly irritated when we asked for his recommendations.
Notably, the steaks, which we ordered medium-rare both came out blue rare (cold to the touch in the centre). When we brought this up to a different waitress, we were treated like we had no idea what medium rare was (see the photo attached) and she insisted this was “french medium rare”. Zero apologies. Offered to re-cook the steak, but having seen previous reviews about bad experiences with this, we declined. We aren’t confrontational people, we didn’t want to cause a scene or make the people around us uncomfortable by arguing with the staff and voicing how we felt, so we just decided to let it go. The way the staff spoke to us also made us feel less comfortable voicing our concerns.
At the end when asked if the food was good as we paid the bill, we gently and politely mentioned again that the steak wasn’t cooked the way we had liked, and we were quickly spoken down to saying that we essentially had no idea what we were talking about and that it was “french medium rare”. Blatant gaslighting. Again, no kindness, or warmth. Only a terse and accusing comment from her saying “well if you didn’t like it you should have asked for it to be cooked again”. It doesn’t really make you feel great as a customer to have the blame shifted to you for the mistake of the restaurant.
I understand things happen in a busy kitchen, and I appreciate the offer to have the steak re-cooked, and I acknowledge that it was our choice to decline this. Even if the steak had been re-cooked perfectly, the part that made this experience negative was really the way we were treated by our server. We were made to feel ignorant and small when all we did was to point out that our food wasn’t made the way we asked. If any kind of accountability and retribution for the steak had been offered, or at the very least if the staff had been warm, and kind, I would not have felt the need to leave this review. But here we are. Reading other reviews, we are clearly not the only ones who have had this experience.
I hope the staff and owners can take reviews like this and the other similar ones seriously, for the sake of future patrons.
Unfortunately, my recommendation based on this experience is to not spend your time and money here. Paris has many beautiful restaurants with great food and warm, genuine service. Based on our experience, Robert et Louise is not...
Read moreHonestly, this was 2nd on our list, The place (shall not be named) we wanted to go was closed for the last weeks of summer (August).
We searched online and found this gem. We went online to make our reservations for 3, requesting to be seated at ground level. The last date available before they too closed for summer (13th of August). Picked our dinner time for 2130. Confirmation reply was quick.
We arrive 10 minutes early. Showed them our reservations and was seated promptly. Our server greeted us, showed us the menu, and brought us a bottle of water (tap).
We ordered:
Starters: Escargot, it was fairly good, a bit dry, (would like to have more butter to dip the bread) but still good overall.
Main: Entrecôte (Ribeye). We ordered 3, 2 À Point (Medium) and 1 Bien Cuit (Well Done). The steak was cooked perfectly. However, the one that was supposed to be well done was still more to medium, the server did asked if I would like it to be cooked more, but I declined as maybe I should try it how they cooked it. Overall, the meat was juicy(all that was needed was a sprinkle of rock salt already placed on the table), potatoes some crusted (cooked in beef tallow maybe?), and a small serving of salad would satisfy your hunger and any meat cravings you might have.
We wanted to order the T-bone but was not available and were contemplating on ordering the prime rib (1 kg) to share. I think this is something that you should try if you are dining with friends to share. This is something we would like to try the next chance we have.
Dessert: Crème Brûlée, this was the perfect dessert to close the meal. Not too sweet, perfect hardened caramelized sugar all around. Warm custard near the top with a slight chilled custard at the bottom.
Atmosphere: Seated near the entrance, we had the best of both worlds. Feeling the light evening breeze, on a rather warm summer, combined with the view of the open fire grilling our steaks.
The place is cozy and intimate. What made the best difference was how friendly our server was. He was attentive, able to communicate in English well, and, surprisingly, breaks any stereotypes that you might have heard when ordering in a French restaurant. Totally a positive experience, and would recommend and be back when we are in...
Read moreMy absolute favorite restaurant in Paris, a third generation family restaurant serving up incredible steaks and meat in an open fireplace kitchen.
One of my friends told me about this place and I didn’t believe it until I went. And then I went back for dinner every single night for the week that I was there.
It’s a super old building in Le Marais, run by the grandson of the original owners, Robert and Louise, hence the name. He lives upstairs with his family, and the personal family touches throughout the place just warm my former-family-business-owning heart.
Reservations are recommended, but there are usually a couple of seats at the hosting table, which seems like the old family dining room table with bench seating right by the open kitchen.
They cook all of the meat in a wood burning fireplace, carefully tended by the owner. The sights and smells are incredible, so I loved sitting right there, mesmerized the by the experience and expertise. The rest of the kitchen is tiny, as the menu is simple.
They serve up a few different cuts of steak, along with duck, escargot, and some specials. You get a choice of two out of three sides, green beans, potatoes, and salad. After having literally everything on the menu, the steak for two is definitely the best, but everything is spectacular. My favorite bit is the salt. This this massive chunky gray salt from Guerande, and I highly recommend dousing everything with it.
The staff is so friendly and welcoming, it makes you feel like you’re family. There’s also the basement seating area that is ridiculously cozy.
I can’t wait to go back on my next trip and feel like I’m...
