This nondescript owner operated bistro/cafe on Caulaincourt is far enough from the frenzy of the commercial side of Montmartre to be exactly where you want to be if you want to eat where the locals eat and leave the madness that Amélie Poulain's neighbourhood has become.

Owner prouds himself on a terroir cuisine. Ask for his recommendations. There's always something special he's concocted.

Outside tables on the sidewalk, looking diagonally across to a small park and elevation. That's the ticket if any are left available. And don't mind the owner's daughter if she happens to be helping. She doesn't have all the answers but will get them for you.

I had the beef tartare and it was really excellent, just spicy enough for my taste. The accompanying garlic and herbs potatoes were a welcome diversion from the lack of originality that French Fries have normally come to represent in bistros all over. Thanks chef! Small salad, usual creamy Dijon mustard vinaigrette.

Started with the escargots, a must at least once every trip to France. Delicious. Ended with crème brûlée. I shouldn't have. It was too good not to finish and I was to full already to be able to. Still, I did!

My only reservation is that the tartare is listed as knife cut on the ardoise and it was definitely minced. Oh well... I didn't get the modern version that I expected, but it was still a...

At the end of our France trip we had a week in Montmartre, eating every night at restaurants in the local streets. Our choice was this one, the only one we visited twice. The reasons were the quality and value of the meals, the warm and welcoming manager, and the ambience which is "old Paris" without being fake or too touristy (a bit like the few remaining 'brown cafes' in Amsterdam). The menu varies each night around what is fresh and available although around a core of 'regulars'. The presentation is excellent, the serves neither too big nor too small, with good accompaniments and even a small amuse-bouche as a touch of class. The chocolate mousse dessert is a triumph if on the menu, très riche and silky smooth. The wine selection is very good and suggestions reliable. This is not a 'fine dining' destination but we found it a good cut above others in the area for a convivial, appetising, beautifully presented and satisfying meal, excellent value for money (given it's Paris) even though the nearby competition are also honest and fine restaurants. On our second visit we were remembered and warmly thanked for booking a second time, which we found genuine...

After dining out at many establishments in my two weeks in Paris, this is by far the best one I’ve been fortunate to come across.

First and foremost, the food is excellent, or if I may say, out of this world. I ordered the grilled razor clam and the duck confit and both were heavenly.

Second, this establishment is very accommodating to those who speak English. The host speaks excellent English and will explain every entree and plate of the day for you. This in itself deserves 5 stars.

Lastly, the ambience of this place is classic. In the background, you have the French classical music station playing which is truly a delight.

If you’re in Montmartre and are in need of a meal, skip the main tourist area in the southern section and come stop at this place. You will not be...
