Postwagen Zum Ratskeller — Restaurant in Aachen

I visited this place on a Thursday evening.

The tables outside were almost out, and inside there was plenty of room, there’s also a second floor where the more space and where the toilets are. I took a cozy table close to the entrance and right in front of the bar.

The atmosphere was really nice, great music was playing on the background, with some oldies to make all come together with the place style.

To my surprise this was not just another bar or restaurant. It was a bit more. A place full of history. It turns out that “The Postwagen” is the only historical wooden structure in the imperial city, because the construction of wooden houses was banned after the dev- astating fire in 1656 (you can read more of the history on one of the photos on the review).

I asked the waiter for a local beer, he told me that they did not have but could offer me one from 10km away from Aachen.

I liked the beer so much that I ended up ordering again the same.

I asked for the menu to see the dishes and found a appetizers and a good variety of German dishes. I’d have liked more options on appetizers though.

So I enjoyed my second beer with a appetizer that I’ve never tried before called “Bread with wild garlic nut butter and mustard cucumbers”.

The mustard cucumbers were something interesting. Although, the food was great.

They serve typical German food with generous portions. Appetizers were cheap and dishes were fair to a bit expensive

The staff was friendly and helpful.

I payed with cash, but I believe that cards were also accepted!

The Postwagen is the only historical wooden structure in the imperial city, because the construction of wooden houses was banned after the devastating fire in 1656.

The Postwagen owes its present name to the citizens of Aachen, who saw a resemblance in the structural appearance to a post wagon. Prior to this, since the 18th century, it was the book seller Freyaldenhoven who gave this building, which stood in the shadow of the Granus Tower, its name, Tradition has it that Freyaldenhoven picked the nickname "Vellespejjel" because although he was a bookseller, he could not read and "read" the wildest stories to his customers from books that sounded completely different when read the next time. He calculated the books according to weight. His fantasy and ability to entertain people with made-up stories and jokes, enjoyed great popularity.

Wir waren samstags bei schönstem Wetter kurz nach der Öffnung hier und haben draußen locker einen Platz bekommen. Aber schon eine halbe Stunde später waren aber immer wieder alle Tische belegt. Drinnen waren viele Plätze zu bekommen. Der Kellner kam sehr zügig, war sehr freundlich und konnte auch auf englisch fließend Bestellungen aufnehmen und Unterhaltungen führen. Als Besonderheit werden Bierspezialitäten einer Alsdorfer Brauerei geführt, Tee vom gegenüberliegenden Teeladen im Siebchen angeboten, es gibt einen hauseigenen Gin, aber auch viele weitere alkoholische und nicht alkoholische Getränke stehen auf der liebevoll gemachten Karte. Wir hatten Kölsch und Weizenbier vom Fass, diese waren sehr gepflegt, gut temperiert und man konnte zwischen zwei Größen wählen, sodass man z.B. beim Weizen eine angenehme 0,3l Größe nehmen konnte. Im Verlauf des Nachmittag gönnten wir uns den "Hungerturm für 2 Personen". Es sind liebevoll zusammengestellte Kleinigkeiten mit sehr leckeren Dips und alleine fürs Auge ist der Turm schon ein kleines Erlebnis. Des Weiteren hatten wir die Forellenrillettes auf Bauernbrot, auch hier blieb kein Wunsch offen; es war frisch, schmackhaft und auch hier aß das Auge mit. Im Verlauf des Tages fing es an zu regnen und alle Gäste flüchteten nach drinnen, so dass es dort schnell voll wurde. Der Kellner hatte kein Problem mit den gewechselten Tischen und hat ebenso zügig weiter bedient wie vorher draußen. Wie auf den Fotos zu sehen, ist es ein wunderschönes altes Stadthaus, draußen sitzt man in der Nähe vom Rathaus und Markt im alten Aachener Flair und drinnen hat man den vollen Genuss des Altertümchens. Was natürlich auch ein Nachteil für gehbehinderte Mitmenschen hat: Das Häuschen besteht aus sehr vielen kleinen Etagen mit schiefen Treppen, die Toiletten sind zwar sauber und zweckmäßig, aber extrem eng. Die stimmige Rechnung haben wir mit EC-Karte bezahlt, ein Bankautomat wäre aber in unmittelbarer Nähe gewesen. Wer abends hier Essen kommen möchte, könnte wahrscheinlich Schwierigkeiten bekommen, einen Tisch zu ergattern, deshalb sollte man vielleicht vorher reservieren. The Worst Experience Ever. My friend came to visit Germany and he has only 2hours，I wanted show him the classic German food. When we ordered we showed the waiter the picture of the food we want，he said yes，we also expained English and French，and the waiter said no problem，then he brought 3 dishes totally not the one on the picture we showed him，and we ordered three different dishes and got exactly the same one. I asked him and he said carelessly that they were what we ordered！ After we left，on the square，the waiter chased us and said he gave 10 euros more to us，we were in hurry so my friends just gave him the money to get rid of him.
