Frederick's — Restaurant in Berlin

TLDR: the place is trying very hard to look expensive, and the packaging is working, but the drinks, the food menu and the attitude of the waiters is just embarassing and not worth it. Berlin has much more to offer. Not suitable for vegans or vegetarians.

Whole review: The food was okay. But that's it. Unfortunately, I've been in enough places in Berlin with similar price range to be completely dissappointed about the service and the atmosphere.

The one page menu with so little desciption of the food (e.g. no information on allergens and portion sizes) reminds on much more affordable cafés and seemed too cheap for the whole interior. There was only one vegan option. The fact the the waitress didn't even ask whether any of us have allergens might be explained as a lack of experience as that's the first question I'm asked at other places. Cocktail and wine menu is very poor.

The bar zone was supposed to close at 1:30, but as there were not enough guests they decided to close one hour earlier without warning their last guests or suggesting the last round. And changed their attitude at some point completely. The waiter was walking and talking with nothing else than bitchy face, as we were leaving he almost ran to the front door and forgot to ask whether we have coats or jackets given at the receiption, though they hanged in the open and were hard to miss.

We were hugely dissappointed and I highly recommend to go literally to any other place, as Berlin offers places with better and more affordable drinks and food. Frederick's might have worked with "experience" at being there, but loses to its competitors, you can find...

Tisch für 5 reserviert. Anlass Geburtstag. Wurde auch angegeben, hat aber bei der Reservierung und später beim Service niemanden interessiert. Oh, ok..schon mal enttäuschend. Location ist groß und interessant eingerichtet. Die Bilder sprechen für sich. Das kann gerade im Bereich der Bar funktionieren, im Bereich wo wir das Essen zu uns genommen haben war die Akustik unangenehm ungemütlich, wie Bahnhofshalle. Das hat der Betreiber aber over all sehr gut gelöst. Von Geruchsbelästigungen im Entree kann ich nichts bestätigen, ganz im Gegenteil - dort war definitiv ein Duft Diffusor aufgestellt, der recht stark arbeitete und angenehme Atmosphäre schuf. Wir hatten zum Essen Pasta + Trüffel, Rinderfilet...Salat mit Garnelen...und Huhn. Wasser...2x Nachspeise...2x Cocktails. Die Portionen sind erschrecken (und das meine ich ganz ernst) klein. Das man nicht satt wird, erwartet man bei so einer Karte auch nicht, daß man sich aber hungrig ist, daß ist mir auch noch nicht vorgekommen. Ich hätte klare Hinweise auf der Karte gewünscht, stattdessen stand bei Mir eben Pasta+Trüffel. Die Pasta ..das waren 6...7 große Paccheroni (glaube ich)...eine Soße wie aus Konserve und echt schlechter alter geschmackloser Trüffel. Ich liebe Trüffel, schon viel und oft gegessen, aber noch nie so dermaßen geschmack- und geruchslos. Das Essen war zum Abgewöhnen. Steak war on the point gut. Der Salat...hust...sorry, aber was soll der Schexxxx....das bekommt man bei jedem anständigen Viet besser hin. Nochmal zum Verständnis: für 14€ bei meinen Pasta hät ich nix gesagt, nur gerunzelt, aber wer 29€ dafür aufruft, schafft Erwartungshaltungen...und da bleibt des Restaurant wirklich MEILENWEIT hinter zurück. Ich war jedenfalls von allen Speisen entsetzt. Die "Krönung": das Brot mit Butter...für 6€ Tacken. Ganz ehrlich - das ist Wegelagerei und absolut niveaulos. Das Brot war 0815 Schwarzbrot das auch noch leicht angetoasted wurde; so macht tricky aus jedem xxxx noch was Essbares (wenn ich altes Brot erträglicher machen will, einfach kurz antoasten...läuft). Wer denkt sich sowas aus? Dann die Cocktails ... :-( ich habe hier und da gelesen, daß die Bar derzeit zu den Tops in Berlin zählt. Wenn man sich die Flaschen in der Barmitte ansieht, dann kann ich zumindest bestätigen, daß man dort überdurchschnittliche Qualität zu stehen hat. Aber ein Drink wird nicht deshalb toll und schick und irre fancy, nur weil man ihm möglichst lange, exotische und unaussprechliche Namen gibt. Ich hatte einkeine-ahnung-was...am Ende wars eigentlich ein Whiskey Sour auf Markers Mark Basis und nicht mal gut gemacht. Das Eiweis war viel zu lose und luftig, der Glas hoch und sehr schmal...und mit einer langen Eiswürfelstange gefüllt. Die hat ca. 40% Volumen in Anspruch genommen, so daß für mein Drink schätzungsweise 110-120ml übrig blieb. Dafür dann 15€ (oder wars es mehr?!) zu nehmen ist einfach nur noch freche Abzocke. Ich habe einen Cocktail bestellt...hallllllo, und nicht ein Lutschfinger-Eis mit Zitronengeschmack, Das ist auch kein Highball....himmelhergott...wie kann man sich trauen, sowas Highball zu nennen, natürlich alles nicht geschützte Begriffe...aber wo ist da die Bartender-Ehre ?! Ich will nur das klarstellen: ich hab kein Problem mit 20€ für ein Cocktail, der wirklich gut kreiert ist und etwas Trinkvolumen und Klasse mit sich bringt. Ums Geld gehts da nicht.....wenn die Gegenleistung stimmt. Aber das hier war echt NIX...zuviel vom falschen Eis (da nimmt man bitte Kugeln oder richtig gebrandete, in Eigenproduktion hergestellte glasklare Würfel)zuviel vom schlechten Eiweiß (was soll das eigentlich sein: veganes Eiweiß...also nur künstlicher Ersatz ??)..zuviel vom Zitronensaft...zu teuer...und dann noch mit nem Glasröhrchen als Trinkhalm. OMG...jetzt wirds richtig Malle. Null Deko (ich erwarte keine Schirmchen..aber Niveau)Null Fantansie, das mit dem Röhrchen hat mir wirklich die Schuhe ausgezogen. Nicht...

I and several of my colleagues came here in November 2022, as our last dinner after a conference. We were staying pretty far and got lost on the way. So we showed up kind of late. The staff was very gracious and wad still able to seat us right away.

The atmosphere is very fancy and quite beautiful, reminiscent of 1920's Europe.

We had some very inventive and very good drinks. I won't spoil the surprise of it all but I'll just say that all of us took a lot of pictures. And we are not usually the "Instagram your food" bunch.

The appetizers were very good. But what I remember most was how a hush fell over the table when we dug into the main course. We were simply too engrossed in the delicious food to keep up our conversation. I remember even making a joke about it.

I've seen a few people complain in the reviews about the price, but we were actually really surprised by how reasonable the price was. I guess it's all relative. Being a New Yorker, it seemed downright inexpensive for what we got. And we splurged for multiple fancy drinks, deserts, and most of us got appetizers and main course.

And finally, the staff was very pleasant and attentive. I'll definitely be back next time...
