Shaniu‘s House of Noodles 2 — Restaurant in Berlin

The food was nice, and the price was very reasonable, but sadly, the service was poor. I ordered a ginger tea, and when I finished it, I asked if I could have some more hot water. They provided it the first time, but refused the second time. I was told, “It’s impossible for us to let you do that again and again (我们不可能让你一直续),” which I found very offensive.

First of all, it was just hot water. In the world of Chinese restaurants, I’ve never encountered one that wouldn’t refill a guest’s tea cup when it’s almost empty. I understand cultural differences, and I can imagine maybe in Germany, tap water will come with a charge. If that’s the truth I respect it. However, why not simply tell me there’s a charge for additional hot water and let me decide if I’m willing to pay? Instead, the response felt like I was being accused of taking advantage of them, which was very upsetting.

To start, I’d say this is one of the low-key Chinese restaurants in Berlin. We went there for lunch and we were greeted at the door and were seated directly by one of the staff. They were professional and friendly, unlike what some people described in the reviews (perhaps these people expect to receive special luxury treatment everywhere they go). Anyway, one thing we noticed directly was how the clean the place was! This is a big plus in my opinion. Moreover, we were surprised how reasonable the price on the menu! We chose the Meat Menu for two people and it was the best decision ever! We were served with some rice, vegetables, and of course the Peking Duck and the grilled pork belly and ribs. It was heaven! What we realized was that the portion was sooo generous. I could’ve bring two friends and I don’t think we could finish the food. The taste of each dish was authentic and savory, full of flavors!! Great Chinese place with amazing flavours.

The duck was nice and juicy, sadly certain parts have been drier, but overall really nice.

The noodles had a great bite and the broth was really well balanced. Other places load their broth with salt to cover up for a poor broth, but this one was just right.

However, the pork was slightly on the tougher side.

Innards were also nice, which a generous portion. Many other places tend to add a lot of bamboo sprouts to save money, but here it we had mostly innards, cartilage and meat.
