SUSHI GANG — Restaurant in Berlin

It kills me to rate this place poorly, since its evident the effort that has been put to make everything outstanding. Sadly, no amount of cool marketing and hip branding can make up for a subpar sushi experience. After all, the devil is in the details.

I decided to give Sushi Gang a try after some raving reviews from friends. Yesterday it was my friends birthday and we decided to pick up an order ar around 9:40 and bring it to an open air cinema.

Much to our surprise, after unboxing the rolls and entrees we found no soy sauce. By the time we realized this we were far from the restaurant and it was also already closed. I ended up missing 30 mins of the movie while I had to go to a neighborhood sushi place to buy some soy sauce to go.

Granted, soy sauce IS on the menu as an item to buy, but I sincerely expected some complementary soy sauce with a 50 euro sushi order. After all, they take the time to write your name in a postcard to thank you. At the very least a warning from the staff, so I could've save time and also actually watch the full movie.

And yes, the place is nice, the tables outside are nicely decorated, the staff is super friendly, and the sushi is good, but does any of this matter if the experience fails where - I think - counts the most? Do you ever actually eat your sushi without soy sauce?

I would love to give this place another chance, but it's hard to pass the dry taste of a sauceless...

The food is really tasty, everything we tried was incredible - from starters to sushi rolls in sets, YUM!

Another highlight is the cocktail menu. Well balanced non-typical cocktails, beautifully served and delicious.

Service was also great, food was served in time, waiters are friendly and check on guests regularly. Big big plus here.

Alongside we also had not so pleasant moments.

We had our table reserved, but by the time we were supposed to sit at it, it was still taken by other guests so we had to wait extra 10 mins and finally decided to nudge a waiter to sort out the situation. Since it was not nice for both us and other group of people, this could have been simply resolved by telling guests how much time they have and when is the next reservation at the table.

Other one, as it was mentioned here, is cash only policy. Which was fine, and well, kinda acceptable, but, damn, we weren’t given a receipt AT ANY TIME. Like not even handwritten. A person just told us how much money, we paid and that’s it. This payment process creates so much SHADINESS about this business. Definitely something I don’t expect from a place with...
