I've been at Tokyo lounge several times already as they offer really good sushi. But last experience was one of my worst memory in restaurant.
We arrived there as a table of 8 persons, got a drink at the bar and joined our table. They offer an "all you can eat" menu at 29 euros which is quite nice. Two of the persons who were with us just wanted to order 2 or 3 sushi on the menu as it's also possible to eat "à la carte". The first reaction from the waitress was "it's not possible. We have rule and either everyone takes all you can eat or everyone eats à la carte, otherwise they cannot order food".
In all honesty, coming from the restaurant industry too, I fully understand why they would say that, avoiding people to "cheat". Knowing this, I politely went to the waitress and asked if they could find a solution for that as we'd rather stay all together for dinner. They first said no, then called management which said no again. Rules are rules.
So let me resume the situation: the restaurant was ok for the 2 persons to stay at our table without ordering, which means we could still have cheated by giving them our food. We offered to pay extra for the food they would eat as honest customer, and got rejected (who said trusting your customer was a key factor in business success anyway) by an unpleasant waitress using a rule that is NOWHERE written in the restaurant or on the menu.
In the end, we had to go to the waitress again (they were not trying to find a solution for us), asked if it was possible to find another table for the two persons so they can have some food, and we ended up eating separately. This is by far the most ridiculous situation I have ever witnessed in a restaurant, anywhere.
Rules are great but a good manager should recognize when it's ok to go around them for ensuring customer success. What a pity, this place was nice but it's definitely our of my restaurant list...
Read moreIf you're in search of authentic Japanese food, I would not recommend Tokyo Lounge. Düsseldorf offers many great authentic options along Immermannstraße, such as Kushi-Tei, which are far superior. This place is more about the ambience, with views of the main street, pleasant lighting, and comfortable seating booths. It feels more like a cocktail lounge than a traditional Japanese restaurant.
We opted for the all-you-can-eat (AYCE) menu at €35.90 per person, as there was no option for a la carte. Unfortunately, the experience was underwhelming. The dishes lacked flavor and the variety seemed random, dominated by sushi rolls and side dishes with no real main courses.
Ordering was done through an app, which was glitchy and difficult to use. Additionally, you could only order four dishes at a time per person. Some dishes took a long time to arrive, resulting in considerable waiting. For instance, the rice for a meat dish arrived only after we had finished the meat, which was frustrating.
The quality of the sushi was disappointing. My plain tuna nigiri arrived as a misshapen piece of tuna with no wasabi between the fish and rice, and the fish itself was dry and not fresh. Most of the food lacked flavor and freshness. While some of the cooked dishes, like the grilled salmon and King Do Kai, were slightly better, they were far from impressive.
Moreover, drinks and desserts are not included in the AYCE menu, which makes the already steep bill even higher.
Overall, Tokyo Lounge offers a nice atmosphere but falls short in terms of food quality and authenticity. There are much better options in Düsseldorf for genuine...

We tried the AYCE (all you can eat) menu for €35.90pp. This was auto-enrolled and we weren’t given an option to do a-la-carte.
