I went to the museum with a family member to see the Ai Weiwei exhibition and walk 'in orbit'. At the front desk we were already not warmly welcomed. The employee was very rude and didn't seem to enjoy his job. He wanted to quickly handle the line and wasn't even willing to speak English. Once we were allowed downstairs to see Ai Weiwei's exhibition we were just looking around when we were approached by a security guard telling us we were not allowed to carry our backpacks in the museum and that we needed to put them inside a locker. I told him this was not clear, because we didn't see any sign at the entrance saying this and because the other employee at the front desk didn't tell us this. He waved it away by saying they were all very busy and they supposedly didn't have time to tell visitors this. I was already not amused by how the staff spoke to us and in the cloakroom the employee there was very unfriendly as well. She told us that we couldn't put the bags in the big locker, because this was for groups and even though she didn't tell us before we already dropped a coin in the locker, she said it with a tone as though we should have already known this. At last we went upstairs to walk 'in orbit'. We apparently crossed a very unclear line on the floor (there also wasn't a sign making it clear where we could and couldn't walk), so yet another employee came up to us and pointed out we weren't supposed to walk there. After that he did look at us several times and walked into our direction, which made us feel like we did something wrong all the time. Going back to the cloakroom the employee there gave us the same feeling by walking towards us and standing behind us without saying anything. Our trip to the museum has made us realize how much the staff can determine how you experience the exhibitions inside the museum. For us this experience was far from great. With 4 employees treating us so badly, it just seemed to us like they didn't enjoy their jobs at all. My advice would at least be for them to find a way to make their working days more fun. Not just for themselves, but more so for the visitors who are coming for a nice day...
Read moreThere's little to say about the museum. The aesthetics of the place are nice, the rooms are well sized which makes the works accessible. The collection is interesting and has some nice pictures, sculptures and other works. We were there at a quiet afternoon and were helped quite enthusiastically by the register in purchasing a ticket.
On the other hand, I read a lot of reviews that complain about the staff, that they are unfriendly and strict. But I think it's all part of the experience. They guide you through the museum like they're driving a herd of cows. If you hang around a little you get stares. All they're telling you is: 'why are you hanging around here, there's nothing interesting to see.' One time we were felt followed by two of the staff. Its this kind of intimidation that's leaves a sour taste.
When I come to a place where all the staff behaves like that, I begin to question the behaviour and attitude of the supervisor and management. It felt like there was a strict culture and the staff were not enjoying their work. This translates into the experience of the visitor. It not only makes you appreciate the art less, but it doesn't give you the headspace to let the work be meaningful. It makes it a draining and forgettable experience.
This 5-star rating is to show that it has potential with the right mindset and...
