Wirtshaus Christoffel — Restaurant in Erfurt

I went there with a colleague of mine while on business trip. The first time we attempted to go there was 1 hour queue and we left. The next day we went a couple of hours earlier and we found at once place to sit. The place is nice and the atmosphere is medieval. The same applies for the clothes of the people that work there and the music. We had issues ordering as there was no English menu and when the server came and understood that we were not speaking German he did not call someone to assist us with ordering. I was lucky enough and I took something I happened to like. My colleague's choice did not seem so nice and he found it so and so. To be fair many dishes that we saw on other tables seemed great and interesting. Only when we finished eating and drinking and asked for the bill an employee that was speaking English appeared to ask us if everything was ok... All in all the place was interesting but you need to either go early or make a reservation to be sure you ll find a table to sit. Moreover if you do not know German make sure you know in advance what you want to take by checking an online menu or some other way otherwise there is a good chance noone will assist you from...

My group arrived at the restaurant on a dark and rainy night. The weather certainly made walking around Erfurt less pleasant than one would hope. We had a reservation, but our local business associate was busy and could not join us. That meant that we had a slightly larger table than needed. Only one member of the wait staff spoke any English and hers was quite limited. They have an English menu on their website, but the translation isn't much better than just using google translate on your phone. The menu really just raised more questions than it answered. In any case, we ordered three meals and what we thought was an appetizer. It turned out to be four meals, all of which were fantastic. Everything we had was delicious. The next phase of problems started when we tried to get the check (which I know how to ask for in German). It took over 20 minutes to be able to pay and leave. I was tired and wanted to go to bed. The inside of the restaurant is great. It looks very time authentic and everyone...

BEWARE OF UNEXPECTEDLY HIGH COST FOR ITEMS NOT ON THE MENU. We had a nice dinner and the food was good with very large portions, but when the bill came there was a €14.80 cost for water. BTW water is not on the menu and will cost you €7.40 per litre for water from the tap. Guess they are going for the one time high paying tourist who won't check the bill. When I challenged the waiter and the evening manager they said they could do nothing. The next morning I reported this unfortunate incident to the Erfurt Tourist Information office. They agreed the cost was too high and even called the restaurant. The manager told this nice lady to BugOff and not meddle. Well...she won't be making referrals to this restaurant in the future.
