On August 06, we came to Hamburg to meet childhood friends after 35 years of not seeing each other. After a great day together and finishing with a pleasant Harbour Boat Ride we decided to all head over to eat some Dinner together and found Nello, an authentic Italian Restaurant nearby with lots of seating available. My wife loves Pizza and Italian Foods so we all decided this would be a great place to check out. After seating ourselves, we found the table was covered in spilled Drinks - possibly Beer. We waited 15 minutes before the Server came by, and we had an opportunity to order our drinks. After the Server took our order for the drinks to start with, my friend's husband politely asked if the Table could be wiped down. The Server abrasively stated that this puddle on the Table is not his problem. Afterward, we decided to leave as none of us felt welcomed there. The authentic Italian Waiter confronted us about our dissatisfaction as he witnessed our decision-making amongst ourselves and on our way out and imposed his aggressive stance and body language towards us. I'm not sure if he was looking for a fist fight or tried to force us to stay and patron his Restaurant but the experience was priceless. It truly delivered an opportunity to appreciate canadian Eateries and their Servers back home in Alberta. This would not happen in Canada without consequences such as loss of employment or other reprimands. Unbelievable but amusing in retrospect. We ended up receiving excellent services and food across the street at Praca De Coimbra, an authentic Portuguese Restaurant delivering a great enlightenment of how wonderful the Portuguese Cuisine is. Thank you Nello for giving us a great Opportunity to learn so much about Portuguese Cuisine and we would go through this with you again if it meant we could discover the excellence of any other authentic cuisine in your surroundings. Good Luck in Business, we now see why your Restaurant was nearly empty at 6pm. I'm sure your Pizza is...
Read moreOn our travels through Hamburg we found this place called Nello, a great Italian restaurant in the heart of the Venusberg area aka Portugiesen-Viertel, a popular quarter for going out in Hamburg’s west side. The whole street – where Nello is located at – is full of restaurants with a lively atmosphere. And by the way Nello is right between the Hamburger Hafen (harbor) and the famous Hamburger Michel, a cathedral in the city center. Both landmarks both are close by.
Nello is an authentic Italian restaurant with delicious food and stylish interior. And in the summer time when the weather is fine there is also possible to sit in the patio next to the street. The staff is very nice, folks from Bella Italia, contributing to this authentic flair of Nello’s.
We had delicious Spaghetti Bolognese, al dente of course, with fine parmesan and on the other hand a delicious, thin and crispy Napoli-style Pizza with fine prosciutto and mushrooms.
So if you are searching for a great place to go out in Hamburg head to the Portugiesen-Viertel and when you are there check out Nello for its great food and atmosphere.

Read moreLow rating is merely due to the attitude of the manager and the server. Walked in to request a table outside, the manager asked if we are eating or just having drinks. I indicated we will be ordering both and wished to sit outside as it was quite nice. The manager was very aggressive about sitting inside until the waiter said it was okay and he can assist us. Not sure why this was such an issue when there was already other people outside having drinks and food.
We were shortly seated and menus provided, and within 2 minutes, we were asked what we wanted to order. We asked for more time to review the menu. Not more than 3 minutes goes by and the same thing happens again. It felt as if they wanted our money and wanted us gone as soon as possible. They also tried to get a tip out of us while paying for the bill in cash. The manager was very rude when we said we are not tipping. I would try to avoid this restaurant as there are much better quality of food...
