Truly unpleasant experience.
I had always had my doubts about this restaurant, after numerous visits to Hamburg, but our experience this evening confirmed our worst fears. Not only is the food unremarkable and vastly overpriced, but Cox exudes an arrogant and inhospitable arrogance. Our indifferent service tonight culminated in the appearance at our table of the owner, who came, not to introduce himself, but to announce that Cox does not accept MasterCard, only Amex(so far, I have only experienced such a policy the other way around).
When we dared to ask why this might be the case, our question was greeted first with indifference (shoulder shrugging), then open derision and finally outright hostility, when we are were asked to leave the premises.
There really are plenty of alternatives for dining in this neighborhood, starting with Cafe Central down the street. Do not allow yourself to be treated like this, it really is not worth it. This kind of open inhospitality should not go unreported.

Not only was the food excellent but the service too, really made to feel welcome.
Only gripe would be the extremely anachronistic payment options - when I asked why it was so, they said they've been here 30 years and always done it that way. And those options are clearly stated on the menu, so it's not like your being misled - just doesn't really suit modern, international visitors at all. Which is otherwise a little odd, given they have the menu very nicely translated into English and the staff all speak it very well too. Seems very self-defeating, and for no other reason than "my house, my rules". Hmm.
If you can make your peace with that, highly...
Read moreIt is a cosy restaurant. We booked a table in advance: it was a good decision as it became quite full later on.
The staff is rather disorganised, chaotic, so it took some time to attract waiter’s attention to make our order.
The bread was fresh and served with butter. The taste was good.
We ordered ravioli with spinach and ricotta. It was served on the broth with mushrooms and topped with Parmesan (why?). The taste of broth was good, ravioli itself average. Total rating: nothing special. Priced 18.- euro
We ordered rump steak. Charged 32,- it was served with chips and some vegetables. It was just a disaster. The feeling of chewing a dole of a rubber boot. Too tough. Why to offer such meal (meat quality) in such a fine restaurant. We were disappointed.
Water in a carafe 200 ml charged 2.5 euro about. Boh!
Bad value for money. Too expensive for...
