A Nautical Delight with Something for Everyone

Walking into Schifferbörse Restaurant feels like boarding a grand old ship. The maritime theme is more than decor—it’s an immersive experience. Polished wood paneling, ship wheels, lanterns, and model vessels transport you straight into a seafaring past, making it one of the most atmospherically distinctive restaurants in Hamburg. The attention to nautical detail gives the space warmth and character without feeling gimmicky.

But Schifferbörse doesn’t just rely on looks—the menu is impressively extensive, offering a range of dishes to satisfy nearly every palate. Seafood lovers will be at home here, with fresh fish prepared in both traditional and creative styles. Meat dishes are robust and flavorful, from classic schnitzels to tender steaks.

Vegetarians aren’t left behind—there’s a thoughtfully curated selection of plant-based dishes that go beyond the usual afterthought salads. Seasonal vegetables, rich pastas, and well-balanced sides show that the kitchen takes care to serve everyone with intention.

Desserts at Schifferbörse are a true highlight, and if you order just one thing, make it the warm chocolate cake. Rich, molten, and perfectly portioned, it’s indulgent without being overwhelming. Paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or fresh berries, it’s the kind of dessert you’ll want to linger over—and then possibly order again.

Service is attentive without being intrusive, and the overall experience combines comfort, charm, and culinary satisfaction. Whether you’re a tourist looking for a unique local spot or a regular craving reliable quality, Schifferbörse delivers an experience that’s both grounded in tradition and open...

If this review was based on my experience alone it would be a 1 but my partner enjoyed her meal so it’s a 3 (generous in my opinion)

We had a booking at 19:00 and arrived on time but were then ignored by the waiters for a short time, which was a slightly annoying start. When we got to our table it was obvious it was meant to be a shared table which didn’t bother us as the next guests turned up just as we were finishing. The menu is accessed by QR code which is fine if you have a good cell phone connection but we didn’t so the waiter came back with a tablet so that problem was fixed after a bit of a delay.

I ordered the weiner schnitzel. I was expecting a fried crumbed piece of veal. What I was served was a borderline firm piece of veal coated in a flaccid and flavourless batter that was not improved with lemon juice, salt and pepper. Totally disappointing. The chips and cucumber salad were ok. My partner’s fish was reported as well cooked and tasty. The wines were ok.

A restaurant that aims to be special in cooking meat should really do better than this. I have been served schnitzel in batter before and I sincerely hope I never am again

In summary, don’t hesitate to try other dishes here but if you want schnitzel cooked properly go to Nagles pub down the street where they do...

First the positives: The location is quite nice for a restaurant near the railway station and their wine was Ok. Though, concerning the food, it was rather disappointing. For a fish restaurant, the fish was very dry and obviously prepared without love. My daughter had the children's Schnitzel, but that one was so small (the size of a credit card!) that even a child did not have enough. Concerning the service, it took very long for the main course to be served. Then the starter we ordered came together with the main course, so we send it back. After we saw a mouse running around under the tables inside the restaurant, we informed the staff. From then on they looked at as as if we had brought the mouse in. We refused any further food as well as the half-hearted trials to offer us a digestif in order to compensate for the mouse. We had lost our appetite and had a chocolate bar at home in oder to satisfy our residual hunger. All in all a disappointing experience. We certainly recommend to avoid this place, especially as there are many better restaurants in hamburg, namely those a little further away from the railway station. We believe that the 4,5 Google rating for this restaurant (has/had) is misleading and far from the 2 star...

This place offers a straightforward menu that delights with its simplicity and quality. The fish is impeccably cooked, paired with French fries sprinkled with a uniquely German salt—simple yet sublime. The homemade remoulade and classic Rote Grütze dessert round out the meal beautifully. Service here is top-notch, and the location is perfect—just next to the train station, with smart glass shielding that keeps the bustle at bay. Affordable and welcoming, the restaurant also serves as a historical haven, its interior echoing the 1700s. Near the Hauptbahnhof, Schifferbörse is known for its efficient service and excellent seafood. It's a lively spot, rich with history and nautical charm, reflective of its heritage and location. With standout pork medallions and friendly waitstaff, the restaurant’s old ship-style decor completes a truly Hamburg dining experience. Definitely worth a visit for a taste of the city's culinary history.

An old colleague of mine took me here during my visit to Hamburg as I wanted to go somewhere authentically “German” (by Hamburg standards). Schifferborse did not disappoint! We both ordered the schnitzel “Seaman” style, which adds two fried eggs and small shrimp on top of the schnitzel. Being a massive port city, Hamburg cuisine tends to have a seafood component to it, so it’s a nice change of pace from the more traditional German-style schnitzels. Service is efficient and friendly. The menu is in German and English as well. The ambiance is a mix of old-world Germany and the set of a “Pirates” movie, I liked it! I’ll note that there is no A/C (no place really has A/C in Hamburg) in the restaurant; I only mention it because we ate there on one of the warmest evenings I’ve ever experienced in Hamburg, so it was “toasty”, to say the least. This is a great spot that I’d return to on my next trip to Hamburg.
