Excellent location for visiting Heidelberg’s old city center. I stayed in a single deluxe, which is the perfect size for one person. The rooms are clean and in great shape. Starbucks is close by for good coffee and breakfast at a cheaper price than the States. Of course there are plenty of German bakeries and restaurants for a more authentic and delicious flavor of eating. The castle, bridge and all other old city sites are close at hand. I loved listening to the church bells ring.
The Weisser Bock is actually a highly rated restaurant with a few (20) rooms. My room faced inward, right above the kitchen. When in my room, with the windows open, I could hear the clanking of dishes and the employees talking, mostly during the dinner hours. It’s quiet after 11 pm, so if you stay out late, the kitchen noise isn’t a problem. If you stay over a Sunday, the restaurant closes at 5 pm, so it’s very quiet. And since there isn’t air conditioning, if you are here during warmer weather, you will need to keep the windows open. If this will bother you, request a different room location. (Didn’t bother me.)
The WiFi is sometimes intermittent. Most of the time it worked. If you want to watch non-German speaking shows, download Netflix or other shows before you get here. The TV is small and only has German speaking channels. Fortunately, I have a T-Mobile unlimited data plan that works in Germany. That helps no matter where I traveled while here.
Some other drawbacks besides the WiFi and kitchen noise, the shower stall is very small. It’s hard to shower standing in one spot. Very little elbow room, although the shower door is well designed. Once you’re done showering the doors can be opened inward which gives you plenty of room to dry off. I do like the adjustable shower head. I need one of those in my home!
There is only one door key card per room, which also controls the electricity. Very smart for the hotel for conserving electricity, but this can be inconvenient. No card key, no lights. I couldn’t charge any electronic devices while I was out of the room, and I needed to recharge my portable USB chargers. If two people are here together, the person staying in the room needs the key. There is a loss of independence if they want to do things separately and return to the room at different times. Also, the front door of the restaurant/hotel locks after 11 pm. The room key is needed to get into the hotel. Not a problem for me since I did not have to share my room key with anyone.
There is no parking right by the hotel. I didn’t have a car, so parking was not an issue for me. I did have to walk with my luggage over cobblestone roads. A bit cumbersome but manageable.
The staff is very friendly and helpful, and for the price and great location, it’s worth the minor inconveniences. I was here for the experience and charm of staying in the old part of Heidelberg. And unexpectedly also here during Heidelberg Herbst, a large annual festival. That was a fun! I enjoyed my stay and would definitely...
Read moreI honestly liked most everything, it's an old institution, or at least building, but it was renovated so that bathrooms are top modern and well planned and made. Room furniture is a la antique mix with some international modern style, but due to pleasant colour scheme it was nicely put together, and although not all furniture are in top state, it makes a good match and atmosphere. Everything fitted perfectly, so there was good planning here too. Bed was comfortable, all facilities were there. Specially room 206 has no view (looking at a wall) but it is pretty quite, which was important for me and they provided. Although I liked the hotel room and the breakfast, I find the price of the room was sufficient to include the breakfast, the additional price of breakfast made the total a bit over the adequate price, to my experience. Another thing would be that the twin beds would be attached to each other, and only if asked for - separated. Very happy we booked a table at the restaurant for dinner too, dinner was excellent- we took the summer menu that had light dishes, beautifully made and amazing sorbet ice cream. Only thing that was annoying was that at the beginning they offer a "surprise drink" which was a nice simple gin syrup glass. The real surprise was the price of it on the bill: if you are charging for a drink like this 50% more than it would cost at any serious bar, advise the guest in advance about this surprise factor,...
Read moreCozy hotel in an old building, nicely furnished, in a perfect location right in the historical center of Heidelberg. The rooms are in the same building of a very good restaurant specializing in German cuisine (the tiny entrance is the same, don't get confused) so it's more a restaurant with rooms then a hotel: no lobby and the "reception" is the same of the restaurant, right in front of the kitchen. Accordingly, amenities and service are minimal, even if adequate.||||||Unfortunately, the rooms are tiny and if they look on the street they can be very noisy even with double glasses on the windows: this is a pedestrian area and people - mainly students, I suppose - tend to stay up until very late, chatting quite loudly. Of course, this happens weather permitting (I was there on a very mild October) so maybe in winter it's all right. Also, the walls are really thin: for the first time in my life I had to knock on the wall to ask my neighbor to lower down its tv. ||||Breakfast - served in the restaurant - was okay, The wifi, however, was so slow and erratic I had to use my phone as an hotspot to be able to navigate the web. ||||All in all, it could be a good choice for young tourists who don't mind the noise, but I wouldn't recommend it for a...
