Sen am Ludwigsplatz — Restaurant in Karlsruhe

Upscale interior and prices. But does not deliver on food.

The restaurant looks nice and attracts a trendy young crowd. The food however disappoints. They have a few Vietnamese classics Like Phõ and Bun Bo, which are quite good. But other Vietnamese restaurants in Karlsruhe can do those better too.

The sushi is the absolute shocker. You have two types of fish to choose. Tuna and Salmon. That's it. (No white fish, no macrel, no cuttlefish) Ok, Unagi and Octopus is also available as nigiri. The selection of hosomaki is better. If that is your thing. The tempura roll is probably good, I had it in the (much better) sister restaurant Bamboo Garden in Durlach. But it's a huge portion and very expensive.

Now to my personal experience. I found it a little cold, the seats in the front are perhaps not advisable. The waitress had a very hard time understanding German, which I can excuse. Tea and miso soup was good. The kelp salad was ice cold and bland. The plate of sushi attractive. However the octopus nigiri tasted off. I should not have eaten it, I got very bad stomach cramps afterwards. For 45€ in total I got a very boring unimaginable quite small meal. Not worth it. Even if the quality...

Yesterday we were in Sen am Ludwigsplatz. We came at 20:00 without reservation. Outside was no free place, but we wanted to sit inside the restaurant, where were 3 free from reservation tables. We were needed to wait 15 minutes to sit for one of them. And near us were running 4 waiters every minute. When we were sitting at the table we made our order. In 46 minutes later I kindly ask how long should we else wait for our orders, because it was already 21 o'clock and we were pretty hungry and we didn't want to have meal at 22o'clock.... and the waiter had said that our order will be ready in 30-40 MINUTES!!! SO BE READY THAT AT WEEKENDS EVENING YOU NEED TO WAIT FOR YOUR ORDER APPROX. 2 HOURS!!!! And they spare lachs fillet for philladelphia rolls!!! You will recieve in a result a tiny piece of lachs fillet on top of roll instead of the from side to side. Was tasty, not georgepus, but the service is absolutelly bad. The woman had tried to safe the situation with a gift snscks, but we wanted to eat sushi, not a snacks. We will not...

SEN Special - leider nicht sehr speziell

Nach einem Besuch der Karlsruher Innenstadt sind wir zum Mittagsessen ins "SEN" am Ludwigsplatz eingekehrt. Das "SEN" wurde von kurzem erst komplett renoviert und sieht innen wirklich klasse aus. Stilvoll, modern und trotzdem gemütlich. Das ist absolut gelungen.

Service: Der Service war in Ordnung, ohne groß zu glänzen. Ich wurde zwar selten in einer Trainingsanzugshose von JAKO bedient, aber so wirklich relevant war es für mich auch nicht. Wäre das jetzt ein Essen zum Hochzeitstag gewesen, würde ich das eventuell anders sehen. Der Service ist insgesamt sehr zweckmäßig, ohne große Freundlichkeit. Man merkt, dass die Lage des Restaurants die Gäste praktisch automatisch einströmen lässt. Auf das Essen mussten wir nicht lange warten. - 3/5

Essen: Ich habe mich für ein Gericht entschieden, welches auf der Speisekarte unter "Chef's Choice läuft. Das Gericht hieß "SEN Special". Dahinter verbirgt sich ein Hühnchen- und Entenfleisch sowie Black Tiger Garnelen in einer leicht scharfen Soße. Ich esse eigentlich nicht wirklich scharf, von daher müsste mir Schärfe auffallen. An meinem Gericht war allerdings wirklich gar nichts scharf. Auch nicht leicht scharf. Leider war mein Gericht auch generell eher fad. Die Soße hatte für mich keinen wirklichen (Eigen)Geschmack. Fleisch und Garnelen waren frisch und auch das Gemüse knackig. Ebenfalls auf dem Teller war eine Portion Salat, die nicht nur Deko gewesen sein kann. Allerdings hatte der Salat keinerlei Dressing. Mir war nicht ganz klar, was ich mit einem trockenen Salat ohne Dressing machen soll. Insgesamt eher eine durchschnittliche Erfahrung. - 3/5

Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis: Unter dem Strich war ich enttäuscht. Bei einem Gericht das unter "Chef's Choice" läuft und 19,90€ kostet, erwarte ich einfach mehr. Geschmacklose Soße und trockener Salat ohne Dressing, sowie eine angekündigte aber nicht vorhandene Schärfe passen da nicht zusammen. - 2/5

Fazit: Vielleicht hatte ich an diesem Tag einfach Pech, generell bekommt das SEN ja gute Bewertungen. Für mich war es eher eine ernüchternde Erfahrung....
