Bäckerei Striffler — Restaurant in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

My first time in Rothenburg and I'd seen these round cake-looking things in an earlier window.

I went to look at the famous photo spot of Plonlein and came across Backerei Striffler. I had turned down a cheesecake earlier so thought I'd treat myself and try the local special, the snowball.

I had a snowball with vanilla and white chocolate, not really knowing what to expect. It's a sweet, crispy pastry all wrapped around itself. I'm not sure what it reminds me of from the UK. A bit shortbready, a bit biscuit.

It was very filling, but rather tasty. Hard to eat on the go, and the birds will get a good bit of mine.

I don't know how this one compares with other bakeries in Rothenburg, but the lady serving was pleasant and helpful and was able to answer in English, so thumbs up, Backerei Striffler.

Stopped in for an early morning coffee and a cake (donut). Not too much to choose on selection for fresh baked cakes. They have plenty “balls” to choose from. If you like those. I purchased a poppy-seed style roll; which turned out that it wasn’t very fresh. Maybe a day or two old. Same that you can buy from a Rewe that they mark up 100%. Coffee was also watered down. Definitely a tourist robbery. Question: how come bakeries in town you don’t smell any fresh bread cooking? I mean the smell of fresh bread cooking is what you should smell walking into a bakery early in the morning.

Answer: most of the product isn’t made on site and not fresh that day.

Service was very good, kind, and fast. They don’t have WIFI and you will lose cell signal. So you cannot really relax while drinking coffee and research the town while...

Smelt the bakery from a block away. Had the unfortunate timing of arriving just as a tour arrived. What ensued was 25 minutes of madness while I waited for a tea and coffee. Multiple tourees cutting the line to order, then since there was no system to keep track of the back orders, they cut to the coffee service line and yelled out their orders. I was skipped by 3 or 4 customers when ordering, then at least 10 customers while waiting for coffee. To top it all off, the coffee went into the trash. It was instant coffee...I should have known something was wrong when the automatic espresso machine didn't make any bean grinding noises. Disorganized and...
