Not the BEST Schneeballs in Rothenburg, but certainly the most various. If you have never had a Schneeball before, my recommendation is as follows: Go across the street and buy one of the marzipan or nougat filled ones from Zuckerbackerei. Their dough is a bit less dry and a bit more flavourful (though the dough being crunchy, dry, and a little bland is part of what a Schneeball *is*. ), and the filing makes for a better first impression. Then, if you like them, come back here. The variety of flavours are wonderful! As for me, I like drier, crunchier pastries, and the Schneeball is my absolute favorite, so needless to say: this store is my personal heaven. I love all the different liquor filled ones. In particular, I find the Eilikor to be the best. For non-alcoholic balls, the caramel filled ones are very good, and the new addition of the lemon-cream filled one is also fantastic. The Pistachio ones don't have a very strong flavour to them, so I wouldn't recommend them, and the Bailey's is also pretty weak, but still tasty. The prices, depending on the ball, are around 3.80€, which is reasonable. The service, for take out at least, is very good, and I've always been met with cheerful employees. The atmosphere is nothing special, but you can sit in the cafe and get a coffee to go with your Schneeball if you want.

My wife and I made a point to try the local "specialties" on our short trip to Bavaria. Google informed us that in RodT, this was the treat to go for. Eh... It was OKAY. On the plus side, there's a wide array of flavour/filling choices and you can eat it in their small cafe (no discernible toilet present) or grab your snowball to go and eat it in the nearby square. On a slightly less positive side, the snowballs themselves were only vaguely tasty, rather dry and challenging to eat. Perhaps we should have watched the locals chomping away for tips, but there seemed to be no way to eat the thing without it combusting, sending shrapnel all over the place while simultaneously getting the choco filling smeared on your hands like a naughty Victorian child. Overall, not bad... But there's better treats out there!

My husband and I decided to try a schneeballen, as we discovered that it was a specialty of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. They certainly looked appealing in the display, but in reality were not all that tasty, and also not very easy to eat. We ordered the milk chocolate schneeballen to share, as one is quite large, and it seemed to be made with cheap chocolate. The cream filling was dense and grainy, which was not enjoyable. Also, their toilet costs money to use. I didn’t ask if paying customers were an exception because staff was busy with the long line of people, but I imagine everyone probably has to pay.

One of the best desserts I have ever tried, and an experience that made my day and one I will never forget! Not only was this recipe delicious, but the owner fully was closing and noticed us standing outside, just missing out on the Schneeballen. As she was about to leave, she rolled down her window and asked if we were about to go inside, and we said yes, but told her that it was okay. She then turned her car around, parked and told us that she was going to open it back up for us to try. Not only did she just open the store back up, but she gave us the full story of how she makes them and gave us a rundown on the different flavors. I had mentioned that I had an allergy, and she then made sure to go through each one and tell me which one was safe to eat. I have never had someone be so kind to me. She told us that she enjoys making people happy with her recipe. Please try this place! There are endless delicious flavors, and the owner puts her heart into making sure that you...

If you’re visiting Rothenburg, Diller Schneeballen is an absolute must-try! What sets these apart from the rest is the variety of flavors and the delicious fillings inside. Unlike traditional Schneeballen, which can be a bit dry, the filling adds a delightful contrast and makes the treat truly enjoyable.

These aren’t overly sweet, which I appreciated, and their recipe respects tradition while incorporating modern touches. Historically, Schneeballen were made to last weeks, and it seems this place has stayed true to that heritage while elevating the experience with their unique fillings and dips.

Unlike other shops that merely dip their Schneeballen- (because we tried the other places) this store fills and dips them with an impressive range of flavors. It’s clear they put thought and effort into perfecting this iconic dessert. Plus the people there are pretty cool and care about your experience.

All I can really say is try it—you’ll understand why it’s the best...
