🍺 Expensive but vast collection of craft beer from Greek, America, and Europe. And the menu is nicely organized so you can easily tell where everything is from. They will also give you a taste of anything on top and offer small tasting glasses (100ml) for drafts at a cheaper price. The staff speaks some English and they have an English menu. Reservations recommended before 9pm on the weekends. And they can accommodate large groups and parties, just call ahead!
🍔Inexpensive food (burgers for €8.70 onion rings for €3.85) and every beer comes with a small bowl of delicious chips. My wife’s chocolate porter stout also came with a piece of delectable dark chocolate from Ghana—great paring I was very jealous of!
💰Beers range in price from €3.20 to €57.50 (a Greek imperial stout with 15% alcohol I hope to try in the future), and more than 500 options in between! Food is €3-8 and looks delicious, but I haven’t tried it (yet).
♿️ No stairs to enter, outside tables are high, inside tables have many heights, including picnic tables with removable benches benches (very rare in Athens!) Lighting is dim but you can still read the menu and the music is not quiet, but you can still talk before it gets too crowded...
Read moreThis place LOOKED like a good find, but STAY AWAY! My husband and I were in Athens with another couple, and decided to do a beer trail. This wasn't on the list, but we stumbled on it and thought "Wow! Great selection!" Between the 4 of us we had tastes of 7 or 8 beers, as one often does at brewpubs. The 2 guys each ordered a beer, the other woman in our group ordered a sangria, and I had just ordered a sangria as well when, presumably the owner, came over and said something to the effect that I shouldn't taste so many beers and then not order! I'm 64 years old and have NEVER been treated like this in my life! It's as if they thought I had tasted all the samples, rather than having it spread among the 4 of us. At that point I left, in tears, and waited outside for the others to finish. If you just want a beer, don't care if it's warm, and don't plan on getting samples, which are apparently rationed here, fine. Otherwise, if you want a pleasant, relaxing experience, avoid this place like the plague and go to Beer Time or Tales of Ales instead! Those folks were shocked when they heard about...
Read moreVisited in February 2015. A mixed experience. Barley Cargo is a place of contrasts, where both pros and cons coexist. The bare and industrial interior caught my attention. It exudes a certain rugged charm that appeals to those seeking an authentic pub atmosphere. On paper, the beer selection seemed impressive. However, my enthusiasm waned when I tried to order from the list. Almost invariably, the response was, “It’s sold out.” Disappointing, to say the least. The entire pub was shrouded in smoke, making it difficult to breathe. Perhaps I’ve become unaccustomed to such environments. This has probably changed since my visit in 2015. The service left something to be desired. While I hesitate to label it outright as unfriendly, there was a certain aloofness. Admittedly, my lack of Greek language might have contributed to the...
