Haircuts and cost of living.
The Economist back in 1986 introduced the Big Mac cost-of-living index. I prefer haircut comparisons. They are healthier and more constructive (or decontructive, hair wise).
When you visit another country for an extended period, get a haircut. First, you get a sense of the cost of living. Second, it can be fun.
Such was the case here in Athens, where I booked a haircut at Sir Barber, which gets excellent reviews on Google, at no less than a 4.9-out-of-5 point average.
I entered the shop, for men, and at once enjoyed the old school ambiance, with 1920s era jazz in the background. The barber who cut my hair had an almost hipster look, which recalled a barber shop I had seen in Brooklyn some years ago.
After a pleasing welcome to take a seat, Dimitri was ready to get to business. He also offered an espresso, which was of good quality.
The wash, cut and styling for only €21. Where I live in France, a similarly attentive barber shop would cost at least double. In any case, Dimitri first washed my hair, then brought out three options from a hairdresser book: a classic George Clooney style cut, a shorter classic cut, and a modern style with taper fade in the back. Being moderate in many senses of the word – politically, economically, in the world of wine, etc – I chose the middle option, the shorter classic cut.
The attention to detail at Sir Barber contrasts sharply with haircuts I have had for example at the The Hair Cuttery in the US, which costs more, at $28, but with the hairdresser sometimes being interrupted by other customers or co-workers.
Another comparison would be with a less expensive option in Kehl, Germany, near Strasbourg, at about the same price as in Athens, but hardly the same attention to detail, with the result being merely OK.
At this Athens venue? Exclusive attention, in a small space. After the haircut, another wash and a styling. Of course, I tipped (well-deserved), and took a photo. If ever in Athens, and you need a haircut, this is a...

📄 By reading these reviews about Sir barber. I felt comfortable enough to give it a chance. This was my best choice since I come back every 2 weeks!
💇🏼♂️ Dimitris, is the professional who always cuts my hair. He is friendly, knowledgeable, has extensive experience and creates a comfortable atmosphere. In addition to cutting well, he often recommends fun activities to do, places to go or series to watch. In short, he is in for a nice conversation.
✂️ The barber shop is authentic and really takes you back in time. Especially because of the appearance, the staff, who wear professional outfits and the good products they use and materials they have.
☕️ To give you an idea. Upon arrival they offer a cup of espresso or a glass of water. They then wash your hair, suggest a hairstyle and then wash your hair again. This is how it goes for me since I do not have a beard or something like that. They do offer this service too.
💰 In terms of price, I currently pay 21 euros. It may be on the high side for some. For me, this price is fine as the entire professional experience is definitely worth it.
💯 If you are convinced and will take the chance. I advise you to make an appointment and clearly indicate what you want. You can also come in without an appointment, but keep in mind that there may not be room immediately.
Thank you Dimitris and the rest for always the great...
Read moreI had my haircut and my first beard treatment (first time growing a beard ever) at Sir Barber yesterday. Even though it was a last minute appointment, owner tried to accommodate me and even called me when there was a cancellation. I asked for a full haircut/beard treatment with hot/cold towel and Dimitris was the one providing this service. I can say it was an experience I regret not doing before. Dimitris was very accommodating to show me from a book of photos the haircut he understood I wanted and explained what I should look for in the upcoming appointments and how my hair should grow which I 100% agreed on. For my beard treatment, he explained the process, detailing every step, hot/cold towels, lathering the beard, shaving/shaping my beard with cut throat razor and removing carefully the nose hair. Also, Dimitris was very patient to explain to me all the steps I needed to follow to maintain my beard and I could see that he is a Barber not just loving his job, but understanding the customer and has the ability to transfer his knowledge and thoughts to the customer which is a big plus. I will be returning to Sir Barber when in Athens again and I will take Dimitris suggestions into account in all my future Barber visits wherever...
