Fama is a quaint understated restaurant located just a little outside of the old town area of Chania, while still located on the waterfront so we were able to catch a beautiful sunset right after dinner. The neighbourhood is under renewal, so no doubt in a little while it will be a bustling area. While at first it may almost seem like a “tourist trap” with an English menu out front it is not the case at all. Costas and his team are preparing and serving some amazing, sumptuous, abundant fresh (take note of this word) meals. We had dolmades (rice and herbs wrapped in grape leaves) - awesome. Fresh Greek salad, of course with an entire brick of feta on top. Fresh fish (we had the Sea Bass, it was fantastic, and before this I have never been a fish person). My mother in law had chicken souvlaki that was tender and a good size serving. The staff was so friendly, adjusted easily to some special requests and were attentive to our every need. While it is customary here that restauranteurs will give a little something free, usually at the end of the meal, they went above and beyond. They delivered Raki for the table, panna cotta for the table with fresh cream and cherries, then karpoúzi (watermelon) all at no cost. We also saw some of what other patrons had, a meat platter for two (which would actually feed four) and a seafood platter for two. Everything looked great. And really, everything was a very reasonable price and, did I mention…fresh? They even warn you on the menu if something isn’t prepared from fresh. 100%...
Read moreA Truly Authentic Gem in Chania 5/5
During our week-long stay in Chania, my partner and I discovered Fama, and it quickly became the highlight of our trip. In fact, it was the only restaurant we returned to multiple times (three, to be exact), simply because it was that good.
From the moment you arrive, you’re welcomed with a warm, authentic atmosphere that sets the tone for a memorable dining experience. The food is absolutely outstanding, everything we tried was full of flavor, beautifully prepared, and felt deeply rooted in traditional Cretan cuisine.
Over our visits, we had the pleasure of trying the grilled calamari, souvlaki, tzatziki, Cretan cheese pie with honey, and dolmadakia, each dish easily deserves a 5/5. Fresh ingredients, perfect seasoning, and generous portions made every meal special.
A special mention must go to our waiter, Nikos, whose genuine hospitality and engagement elevated the entire experience. He was friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about both the food and making guests feel welcome.
If you're in Chania and want a place that delivers incredible food, a cozy atmosphere, and truly memorable service, Fama is the place to go. Highly recommended, we’ll definitely be back next time we...
Read moreI passed here on my way into Old Town to shop after having dinner. And as in the past, when you have a good feeling GO. So the next night I stopped into this very unassuming Greek Taverna. The young lady who greeted me was extremely pleasant and smiling. First she brought bread w/Olives, tazaki & a Herb spread. Since I'm gluten-free I passed on the bread, but it looked delish. I dod eat the other little side she brought with my meal and they were really good. I ordered the Cretan Salade. It was seasoned perfectly!! The cheese that they use here tastes like no other I've had in Greece. Creamy, fresh, hands down .... FACTASTIC!!! I also ordered the grilled, stuffed Calamari. Tender, grilled perfectly, could not have asked for any better. Order the house wine, it definately is smoother than many of the Greek wines I've had. And after 5 weeks in Greece, many different islands, many restaurant meals.....this is in my top 5. Then the young lady tells me almost like she was embarrassed that she cooked the meal herself. Well from Le Cordon Bleu grad..... she's got natural talent, I hope they take notice. Great job!! Great food!! I'm planning my next meal there already....
