Overall experience -ok, nothing special. We have chosen shrimps saganaki, green salad and zucchini balls. Zucchini balls were overcooked and too salty. Shrimps just good enough. What we didn't like the most was that we received a bottle of water, even if not requested, but we were charged for it. Also we received only the melon from the house, without the raki as other tables. I fully understand that this is from the house:), but when the tables are differentiated it's not a pleasant feeling. Hoping that this is only due to busy timing as the restaurant was full. The prices slightly higher vs other tavernas we visited in Chania, but it is on the beach.

Perhaps the worst Greek salad I've ever had, at least not worth the wait of around half an hour. Calzones were whatever. We also had grilled octopus that was hard to chew (even by octopus standards). Overall, we ate it all, so it's not like it was that bad but not coming back here. Not to be a total Karen, I will say that the servers were nice, and still offered us complimentary dessert and raki after I honestly answered their "was everything good?" (It wasn't). And we enjoyed the wine.

I'd love to say I enjoyed the food, but I hardly remember the dish I ordered myself. This is due to dining with the local guide Charles Brown during my time at this restaurant. If you read his review it will fill you in with the context of the situation. In his assessment of the rawity of his chicken Kiev I decided to investigate the food in a more practical manner by directly tasting it.

As I took that bite I pondered the potential consequences of consuming a fraction of raw greek chicken. But ultimately thought it tasted fine, as I had never tasted raw chicken before and had no reference point to know how raw the chicken really was. Turns out the chicken was raw after the chef took a look at it and my friend began worrying for the wellbeing of my life.

In end though I suffered no such consequence for the contact with raw chicken and finished my holiday happily...

So, this small cafe/restaurant is one of many along the coast of Chania. I found it quite difficult to find a good place to eat whilst there, this place adds to the list of where you shouldn’t go. I ordered chicken Kiev’s from the menu. They were severed to me half cooked and completely raw in the middle. The waiter and owner came over and apologised and re-cooked the dish for me. The second chicken Kiev’s were definitely cooked, so much so that I had to use juice from the tomato’s (of the salad accommodating the Kiev’s) in a frantic attempt to put some moisture back into them, and when I was served the second dish, the waiter tried 3 times to give me the same cutlery I cut the raw Kiev with. I didn’t pay for my meal. In conclusion, the staff and owner are lovely, but the food is...

Of all the restaurants on the Nea Chora seafront (I tried all of them), Volakas has the best stuffed zucchini flowers and the among the best value for money overall (there is a close competition between three contenders there). Whatever you'd order is at least very tasty, and vegetables and fruit are fabulous. Everything was fresh, to the point that 'mixed smoothie' was different every day, depending on which fruit came in. The default white wine we got was fantastic, but I guess that depends on the day and the bottle. The interior design is rudimentary, but the staff create a great atmosphere, caring genuinely about the clients and their needs and there is a feel of a true family restaurant. I enjoyed every minute spent there, every time. Highly...
