This bustling restaurant is tucked in a small, picturesque alley close to the waterfront promenade of Paleochora. Nevertheless, if you close your eyes and open them again you get the impression that you are somewhere in Plaka, Athens enjoying a touristy menu. The food is traditional alright. You won't be offended but you won't smack your lips either. The fried feta in honey pastry was over-moist with oil. The moussaka (eggplant and potato baked in creamy bechamel sauce) was indifferent, lacking that distinct spicy aftertaste. Aristea's is advertised as a Cretan tavern but the wine menu includes for example just one "Cretan" white wine label by mainland producer brand Boutaris. A final note. We called to reserve a table in the alley. They said they could only guarantee a table in the courtyard (!). When we arrived there was a reserved table for two available in the alley. They insisted that it was a table for four. Still it was a reserved table. After long deliberations we were granted the table. Average dishes, bad customer service. A pity because 10 years ago dining here was a worthy...
Read moreBeware: Solo diners not welcome!! I have eaten at this place several times in the past. Tonight it was busy and I asked for a table for one person and was told to wait, which I didn’t mind per se as the place was busy. However, right after me there came 2 people and I could not believe my eyes when they were given a table first (mind you, the size of the table is the same) when they had clearly arrived after me. The „nice“ lady (the owner?) proceeded to ignore me even after I pointed out that I’d been there first. Then a party of four came and they were also given a table before me at which point I decided to leave (thanks to the nice 4 Austrian strangers who offered I could sit with them at their table, the gesture is highly appreciated) and spend my money at „Little Angels“ where I’ve always been treated respectfully as...
Read moreWe have come to this area 3 times in the last 6 years. This restaurant is always full so we thought we would try it. Two moussaka and a Greek salad. The salad was fine, even with no olive oil. But the moussaka lacked flavour. In fact over the last 3 weeks in Crete, the most mediocre meal we have had. I usually have ice with my wine ...but didn't need to tonight as it was already watered down . A real tourist trap. The hostess was very effusive with her regular customers , but everyone else was ignored. The general waitresses were lovely. There are a lot better restaurants deserving of our custom. We...
