I don't usually write negative reviews so I will start will positive first and be really honest.
Good: When we arrived, even though the staff was all sitting outside and the place looked closed, they said they were still open. The owner(?) host came over and asked us what we liked to eat. He recommended a local beer that was quite good and felt like he was trying to be really welcoming so we gave him trust to bring us food he chose. Usually this is a good thing and good hospitality! The price was also not bad for 2 people, thank goodness, because ...
Not good: It was pretty overwhelming and I was uncomfortable to reject or say anything bad because we gave trust to him to choose our food. I said I liked seafood and my partner was vegetarian. My partner got a bunch of basically leftover fried vegetarian appetizers. The zucchini fritter things were cold in the middle and not cooked through. When we mentioned this, the guy said it can't be fried too long or it would have burned the outside... But we have eaten that same dish at many other restaurants and it has not been cold in the inside and cooked all the way through unlike this. No salad or any other vegetable was brought. For me, he wrote down Fish when I said seafood (I assumed that meant seafood...bc I didn't say fish). I received a whole kinda stewed fish. Literally only a fish with nothing on the side. The host said it was a good stew or soup fish... It was a good fish, I just wish it had been in soup or stew or anything to make it an actual meal, and it was not properly scaled so I got some scales in my mouth that was pretty gross. I asked what was in the seafood platter and he said "No one knows". And that's what he gave me. A fried seafood platter with a few calamari, a single shrimp, and 3 small bony fish that were full of pinbones and not fried in a way that you could eat the bones. While the fish tasted fine, I did not want fish unless it was gonna be sardines or something I didn't have to work so hard to eat. It also took me forever and a lot of effort to eat the fish and that was absolutely not what I was up for that night because I was hungry. The guy even asked me why I didn't finish the calamari and I felt too bad to say it was barely breaded and really rubbery, and was cold by the time I finished the fish which made the texture extra off-putting. I just left hungry still.
It felt like we got hustled and he gave us whatever leftovers he had in the kitchen because maybe they were already closed, and we couldn't reject what we got because the guy was so overwhelming hospitable and chose it for us. Maybe their actual menu was good because we went there for the good reviews but this was literally the only disappointing meal that we had in Greece and we were there for...
Read moreI dined here with my boyfriend today and I notified the staff that I am vegan and gluten free. I explained that gluten is in wheat, barley, and rye, and I explained how if I eat gluten I will become extremely sick. Multiple staff assured me several times that this corn pita was gluten free, however my boyfriend tasted it for me and told me it tasted like it had wheat flour. To be safe, I packed it up and took it home and asked for the brand name so I could check later. When I checked, the ingredients were 47% wheat flour. If I had eaten this I would have ended up in hospital. This is a warning to anybody with allergies or intolerances to be extremely careful. The staff were so lovely, and I hate to leave a bad review, but I regret that I was misinformed by staff more than 3 times about the ingredients in my food.
EDIT FOLLOWING OWNERS RESPONSE: GMO free and GLUTEN free are NOT the same thing. The packet does say GMO free, however that means it contains no genetically modified ingredients. That is not relevant to gluten.
As you can see, the first ingredient on the list is WHEAT flour. Wheat contains gluten (as I explained). “Gluten” is never listed as an ingredient as it is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. If the ingredients say “WHEAT”, it contains gluten. I am not coming back to this restaurant as I don’t want to waste my holiday time.
If you can provide a photo of the packet showing it does not contain wheat, I will delete my review. I also looked at the product myself in a grocery store yesterday. It...
Read moreSometimes, you just know. Riding past this inconspicuous place...full of men... only ..all over 60. All Greek. Something is happening here, as sure as I know my girlfriend has had work. The owner is at the tables, animated as gambler post jackpot. Arriving at the table with the menu...I hand it straight back "what am I having?" ...he replies "where are you from, Australia? Are you vegan?". We agree that I'm as vegan as a sumo wrestler, and he tells me I'm having cuttlefish and moussaka... both are amazing. The cuttlefish is carelessly cut, braised with thumb sized onions in a sauce of oil, flavoured with tomato and oregano. It all sits on chips that soak up the oily yumness almost as well as the fluffy bread that now has a purpose in its fully baked life. The moussaka shows how hard it is to get this simple dish right. The eggplant is there but contributes colour and background texture. The potatoes haven't left the ground any longer than a plane on ascent. They're cooked perfectly, as their waxy, even texture, is surpassed only by their "a potato actually has" flavour. The Greeks know bechemel better than the French, and this one has the perfect nutmeg and clove scent through its sparse but effective contribution. I could try 100x to make this dish as they did today, and I'd be as far away as I am from home right now. Apparently, I was lucky to get in...its a locals place for locals. Guess I'm...
