Kritamos Restaurant Rethymno — Restaurant in Municipality of Rethymnon

Big Brother is watching you. I got asked 3 times by the waiter to write a review, so here it is. First off, the food is fine. Not great. I ordered sea bass and got sea bream. The reason for this was that the waiters are too self-absorbed with what they are saying, that they don't really care what you say. Anyway, not a big issue. The root of the issue with this restaurant is the owner/manager who sits upstairs and watches her staff like a hawk from the window. She gets angry every time they let someone walk past the restaurant and then comes out of her office to get an even closer look. The staff feel constantly on edge to get people in the restaurant. I feel sorry for them really. Their attitude is entirely due to the owner who encourages them to act in the way they do. Lastly, they practically force things on you that you don't want. We got ripped off for some starters. Again, probably a policy of the owner. My advice is to avoid the harbour altogether. It's great for a scenic walk, but the restaurants are all show, no go. The staff seem friendly and cheerful until they get you inside and then take advantage. We were met at the pavement with an aggressive hustle. Okay, they have a business to run. So we were recommended the fish plate, only one of us eats fish. I was expecting sardines and a bit of something else as well as mentioned by the overly solicitous waiter. I got a plate of prawns and octopus which was tasty so no complaints. At the end when we received our bill we were charged for a starter of bread and cheese which we didn’t order and couldn’t even eat being gluten intolerant. Then we were charged exorbitant prices for my recommended prawns and octopus. It was if they made up the price on the spot and it certainly wasn’t transparent. Tourist trap / Old fish If you do some research on the internet, you'll read everywhere to avoid this place. Yet, I just had to try it. Upon arrival and reading their menu we already got approached by someone working at the restaurant to lure us in. However, this person himself was fun and had manners. I just don't like the "pushiness". I Tried their lobster and prawns, and they were absolutely NOT fresh. The waiter working there is an absolute chimp as well with no manners. You'll eat for a whole week in other restaurants for the price paid here.

Advice: avoid this place at all costs! If you want to spend money for something 'chique', don't do it here.
