This gelateria/café/sea-view spot is every bit as good as the internet says. Funny thing is, we almost walked right past it. From the outside, it looks like just another average street café. The long ice-cream counter doesn’t exactly shout for attention, and the sign — covered in vines and written in Greek — doesn’t help either. So don’t bother looking for “Meli” in big letters, you won’t see it.
Inside, it’s buzzing but not chaotic. No lines for the ice cream, which is what we came for. And it didn’t disappoint: silky, rich texture, great variety of flavors, and scoops that are generous for €2.85. Service is friendly, quick, and no fuss.
They offer the usual drinks, cakes (tempting, but we’d already stocked up on sweets elsewhere), and possibly food as well. The seating is actually quite nice — small armchairs that are comfy and a bit luxe-looking, with enough space between tables that you don’t feel crammed next to strangers. Add the sea view, and it’s a place you could linger longer than planned.
According to the internet, the ice cream is made with goat’s milk. Can’t confirm, but the pistachio I had was outstanding either way. Creamy, nutty, and just...
Read moreThe place is one of the greatest in rethymno, the ice cream is amazing but the menu doesnt offer many options other than sweets, which would be appreciated. What was horrible, is that the manager/supervisor was treating and speaking to the staff in a horrible and really demeaning and degrading way, which ruined the whole experience for me personally. Something needs to be done, about that, it's not a nice sight to act like that in general, let alone in front of customers. She seemed rude even at the counter where i went to pay. Take care of this issue! Either tell her to correct her behaviour and be nice, or change her!
Other than that, the food that we ordeted was nice and the aesthetic and decoration of the store was well...
Read moreMy nose crinkled a bit when I first heard of this Goats Milk Ice cream, but I thought I ought to give it a try as it comes highly recommended. First of all, I could not detect any ‘goatyness’ at all, the ice cream was really creamy and smooth in texture. The menu is extensive, and it was hard to choose. We settled for a Chocolate Orange ice cream, and it was Da Bomb!! Chocolate ice cream with a few candied orange pieces in it, drizzled with a smooth delish orange sauce, as well as chocolate sauce. Topped with whip cream and chopped almonds. It was decadent and flavorful!! It was busy, but service was still pretty...
