It was ok, the food was reasonable, but for the price it was good, not had a carbonara with milk and cream before, but hey, it was ok, a different way of making it. I did feel the staff really focussed on the regulars, they got hugs and jokes and a lot of attention, where we, the newbies, had to ask for the desert menu twice, nobody brought it to us, so we gave up and asked for the bill, after asking three times my family went off shopping and I sat there waiting for the bill. Eventually they brought me 3 free puddings I did not order, and the bill, which I had to send back two of the puddings as my family were not coming back. They had a lot of staff and it was hard to catch their eye. I think they need to focus on all their customers equally and not have two people serving their “vips” whilst other tables are waiting. I would go there again and only knocked one star off as overall it was ok and very reasonable cost wise. Note, if you pay by card you have to walk up to the till, they don’t bring a contactless device...
Read moreWe ate 6 times at Down Town during our stay as it was our go-to lunch spot when we were at the beach. We really loved it. The restaurant is light, clean and airy with plenty of fans, so perfect to cool down at after a day at the beach.
The food was excellent - me and my son tended to cycle through the souvlaki/gyros options which were all superb. My wife developed a love for the ‘Downtown salad’.
My favourite was the ‘build your own bruschetta’ appetiser they give you, with some special salt that they were kind enough to give us a jar of at the end of our stay.
You also get a dessert at the end of the meal, a lovely honey cake with some ice cream.
I’ve been trying (and failing) to learn Greek for a few years now and one of the staff, Eleni, was very patient as I ordered in Greek, and we even had a little conversation. All the staff were excellent but she welcomed us back each day with real delight.
Overall this is a lovely place I cannot...
Read moreA lovely restaurant on the Rethymnon waterfront. The owner speaks several languages, including Italian fluently. He promised us that no other restaurant in Rethymnon's old town would be better, and that was indeed the case; in fact, we returned four more times. The food is excellent; I've asked for advice on fish and meat several times and have always been satisfied. The restaurant offers bruschetta as a welcome dish and dessert with raki. Both are delicious, as are all the dishes we've had. Excellent value. If you're one of those people who feel harassed or offended by a hand on the shoulder, don't come here. Here, the welcome is warm and you're welcomed like family: big smiles, pleasant small talk, and yes, the staff may touch your shoulder or arm, as you would with friends. We really enjoyed the atmosphere. Thank you Down Town for the beautiful and delicious dinners we...
